but we only want to make money where we're adding significant value, and we're not trying to control anything or anybody.
Totally dude, adding value is 100% where its at in terms of digital music now surely and I am definitely in to alternatives to iTunes.
Good luck with your venture Dave, I'm rather keen to hear what Joe Public does to The Mint Chicks.

So many things to comment about!
LANEWAYS was great - drinks token things are lame as heck though. Practically everyone in our tour party ended up with left over tokens at the end of the night. If cash handling is the problem then why not just have mobile eftpos? Eftpos is a high functioning universal technology in this country and when festivals don't use it annoys me to the core.
The 3Ds ruled, The xx were impressive. The Dirty Three were shamans of glory.
FLAGS - I wish we could have on flag that represented Maori and everyone else. I hate our flag. Its boring. I think 'tino' has comes with too much baggage. I personally would have no problem with it being our national flag, but a lot of people would.
MusicHy.pe - I'm a bit confused about this website. In saying that I downloaded the Mint Chick stems and I'm looking forward to messing with their shit. It makes sense to me that The Mint Chicks would be looking to new post Warners ways of getting their music out. For one thing they are natural innovators and for another their record label has been sold for a second time...but this time without them. Its quite a weird situation. -
Great article. I'm too simple minded to make any actually comment on it, other than i found it really clever and interesting.

I'm not going to Wilco this time around for various reasons-the main one being it's hard to see how they can top the Opera House gig last time.
Same, that gig was amazing and although I really like the new album I just can't see myself enjoying a townhall gig anywhere as much. I'm a sucker for a seated venue these days.

Man I'd love to see Al Green. One of the greatest for sure. Sadly though my flying to Auckland gig credits have been taken by The Pixies (and a vague hope i might get a ticket to see 3Ds/Pavement at the Powerstation).
one thing that really doesn't work in BDOs favour is how many small internationals are touring NZ all year round these days. All the groups brought out by Galesburg/Mystery Girl...and the more obscure old school reggae acts that keep popping up. We are spoilt for choice with the sort of bands that used to get me up to the BDO and away from the main stage.
My goodness I mean Yo La Tengo and the RZA are playing the SFBH in Wellington in the next couple of months and I don't have tickets for either. I really really love (deeply) both those acts but some sort of international act overkill has set in.
Why are so many of these bands touring NZ all of a sudden? Is it a combo of strong NZ dollar and bands playing live coz they can't sell any CDs?

I have to say that I am much more excited by the Laneways lineup than the BDO, and not just because its the one I'm playing at. Daniel Johnston, the Bunnymen, Surf City, 3D's. It is just more catered to my taste I think (the post 30 grumpus music snob demographic).
I really enjoyed the BDO last year but my whole day was sprinkled with the happy knowledge that I was going to see Neil Young at the end of it. Without a draw like that the half dozen bands I like a fair bit (but would rather see at a small venue) are not that attractive a reason to be stuck in a sun baked sound prison for 10 hours.
...after seeing Ladyhawk at R'n'V last year I would highly recommend seeing her set. She knows how to rule a festival.
I am really excited about seeing the 3Ds. Only saw them once, at my first BDO experience I believe. Their music has aged very well.

Top 5s? I love em...
this year I have been loving;
1. Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
2. Lawrence Arabia - Chant Darling
3. Atlas Sound - Logos
4. Flaming Lips - Embryonic
5. Bon Iver - Blood Bankbest track AND video
Röyksopp feat. Fever Ray - This Must Be Itthing I'm looking forward to in 2010 CONAN MOCKASINS ALBUM!!!! What I have heard off it is just amazing.
And Russell, we actually made it to 5 on that chart, so thank you and the other tweeters very much, it fun to change the internets.I am very happy that Roger has FN back, its been a long time coming. For a while it seemed like he would be doing it with the great people from Arch Hill, and honestly and I think that could have been great. Considering they have been releasing The Clean, Bats, David Kilgour etc...but regardless this is a great thing for NZ music and I wish Roger all the best.

What about 'ponzi'? that is my word of the year.
