All good, though awareness of advertising is meaningless unless it translates to action.
The only really useful thing that has been said about advertising is "Advertising works 50% of the time but nobody knows which 50%" (usually attributed to Lord Kellogg). But in terms of changing social attitudes (not just selling stuff), it is probably better to do something than nothing.

Thanks for this, Steve. Much appreciated.

Thanks, Russell, for this column
Welcome to the discussion, Marian.
For all my despair at the November election, I do admire Paula Bennett for her intervention into the fracas outside a Henderson shopping mall at the weekend (reported in today's Herald). It is a brave thing to do. I still have a ropey thumb from intervening in a street brawl in Wellington years ago, which makes me reluctant to do it again.
Perhaps we need more instances of cabinet ministers applying their portfolios in the 'real' world eg Ann Tolley could spend a week or two in a NZ classroom; Rodney Hide could dig a few ditches or catch a few stray dogs!

Well, haven't seen any dissent on this thread just yet. Is it OK to disagree with Uncle Rusty
Well, Russell does check his facts, and is able to distinguish between informed opinion and ill-informed opinion.

What are Bill Ralston's qualifications?
He is another example of someone who has excessive access to the media. Like others of his kind (Richard Griifith, Joanne Black, Michelle Boag, Ian Wishart) etc etc, he just won't go away and leave us in peace. I no longer tune into Jim Mora's The Panel, for these folk regularly pop up there, like some sort of rash. It might sound 'smug' but I love PA because it welcomes and celebrates dissent.

The local attempts at potato skins are pretty poor too; a very distant cousin of the crispy, crunchy skins I remember. Most local versions of Mexican foods are slop too. I was mightily disappointed in the food at the Mexican Cafe in Victoria Street (?)--over-priced, limp and lack-lustre food (but a good atmosphere). No one should have to pay $25+ for a plateful of what is everyday fodder south of the border.

...you are just teasing us again...8 seconds of "...I've been to Hollywood, I've been to Redwood. I've crossed the ocean for a heart of gold...". Those of us who didn't get to BDO need MORE!
But pleased you enjoyed it so.

The Neil Young clip on YouTube is great but such a tease...is there any way we can see more of his performance...and maybe TVontheRadio??

Well your car certainly is. Something like BLT169 probably
'fraid not. Some people call it a 'people-mover' but I prefer to call it an over-sized van-thingy, which is difficult to back (witness the numerous dings!)

the Auckland Film Society had a Jacques Demy retrospective last year
The chap sitting next to me muttered, "If they open their mouths to sing again, I am going to leave", and did so. I wished I had had his courage.
