  • Hard News: The Short and Long of It,

Giovanni - OK wrong example for a useful analogy. My apologies for coffee growers everywhere.

Hopefully most readers will understand wordcamp / wordPress are about trying to take away the process pain so that content generation and facilitation is easier.

Also WordPress an Open Source system where users make voluntary donations for the most part (or not.)

  • Hard News: The Short and Long of It,

Firstly thanks for all the publicity about wordcamp and WordPress. As one of the organisers I can't help but feel flattered by the attention.

There are 15m+ blogs & wordpress based sites some with thousands of users - lets not tar everyone with the same brush.

Opinion is the currency of the blogging world. Robust opinions are fine with me and most blogs wouldn't exist without strong opinions.

Regarding wordcamp nz - We've gone out of out way to make it as open and acessible as possible to people to attend ($75 for nearly 2 days of tips and tricks) and we plan on giving away 300 or so hosting accounts plus other prizes.

We are also supporting the bowling club as well (rather than a corporate business in town.)

We are specifically recognising voluntary organisations and giving them a helping hand. WordPress is an enabling technology and the whole point is for the "systems" to vanish as much as possible so users can concentrate on the content.

I know many of the comments here are meant in good faith and fun but wordcamp is a way to connect the different users of the WordPress systems with each other so they can get on without being distracted by the technology and systems.

In very simple terms a good blog / website is like a good cup of coffee.

We can get all distracted by the any number of things in the coffee making process like - are the beans freshly roasted and so on. Important to a point but really we just want a good cup of coffee.

Sometimes features are important to users but really only when that gets in the way of the content.

Also I disagreed with Lance on his blog and made comments to that effect supporting PAS.

BTW - Threaded conversations are only working on a few wordPress sites as it in relatively new and not all themes support it yet nor will they.

For anyone wanting to check the schedule

    wordcamp NZ schedule

At the end of the day wordcamp is about making it easier for anyone to blog just like many PAS readers already do.

  • Hard News: Our new strategy is to FAIL,

My sources tell me that, under the revised legislation, offenders will have their iPods crushed.

Or perhaps sent to Christchurch / run over by a book racers car and then crushed along with the car.

The irony of a conservative government dealing with multiple flip-flops on extended property rights shouldn't be lost on anyone

  • Hard News: Another entry in the Public…,

    Take care Russell,

I know from first hand experience some of what you have been going through and feel lucky to have been put on some preventative medicine early in the cycle.

  • Hard News: Night at the Museum,

I did the Sonic Museum tour last weekend. Not so taken with all of the tracks but like the idea I can also download to the iPod and use my own headphones if I wanted to.

I think Steve Garden did a sound installation at Te Papa last year but maybe that was for a specific event at another Wellington museum / gallery.

Would have loved to have been at LATE especially given the topic but just clean forgot about it until about 8pm andf then it was too late to go.

  • Speaker: The Telecom XT Discussion,

Thanks Rebecca. It feels like a new era for Telecom and mobile phones in NZ. Will be interested to see how Friday goes.

I more interested in mobile data than an actual phone / that is more of a bonus. That Tstick is so ugly it just has to work well and if I read you correctly it may be actually faster after Friday.

Don't have time for queues so will wait till Monday.

  • Speaker: Good Times on High Street,

There was a story around at the time that Billy Idol was refused entry to Box / Celeb. Would be interested to know if that was true or the a retread of the Jagger story.

I was at A Certain Bar, Zanzibar and Box/ Celeb often enough. The Hat barmam was a real star and worth a visit just to see him in action.

My best night though was watching Nathan Haines play with a probably Freebass / although it could have been the Enforcers and talking with Mark Phillips who was there and buzzing about some Japanese discovery. I think that was United Future Organisation?

I think that was the first time I saw live music mixed with turntables.

I stil have a copy of the Huh compilation "The New Groove" which I believe was one of the spinouts from the clubs.

I remember thinking at the time how lucky I felt to be listening to Nathan Haines having been around long enough to know he was on the edge of something huge.

Towards the end of the '80's I manageded to work /live in Sydney / Melbourne / Adelaide and Brisbane and then I knew that Box / celeb was streets ahead on most counts.

I did enjoy Australian music culture as well but there wasn't much finesse to it at that time.

  • Hard News: ffunnell Up!,

I get completely different results from Google and Statcounter on my Blog. I have no idea why

Google probably has more depth to the numbers.

I look after quite a large number of sites and we use a selection of tracking systems. There are the usual logfiles and then I have some others that show splits from spiders and people since many of my sites have blog elements that are pinging external services.

I sometimes use caching systems if there is a traffic spike fr example as sometimes happens if a link is booklamrked on one of the high volume services.

All traffic is not the same however / and useful to know what the RSS feeds are doing and if any big media files are dragging along as well as "what Mark Harris said" about trends / 404s and the usual activity trails to watch out for.

I think overall traffic is of interest / repeat traffic is good. Impressions can be useful but maybe a better indicator is the number of comments and interactions.

Some of my sites have threaded comments which is a bit more like the forum approach. I'd say that would be one element I'd look for with Supermodel if Karl / Matt is reading.

I've played around with Woopra and some other alternative analytics packages but since most of my sites are open sourced there is a fairly constant stream of updates and overall if a site is growing that is a good thing for advertisers and everyone else.

  • Cracker: The Happy Hikoi,

You know with all those people there and fairly large turnout on Sunday on the bridge I'd say there is a healthy group pf people thinking on their feet and not taking that much notice of grumpy old media figureheads.

Im probably still a minority group but I haven't taken that much notice of main stream media on TV or newspapers for the best part of 10 years now. I do like radio because they actually have analysts on to talk about the subject rather than themselves.

I watched a Paul Henry clip the other night and I just couldn't believe he wasn't taking the piss. Apparently he is like that most of the time.

Presenters are not the story - somehow radio seems way better than TV in that regard.

I read more in depth coverage from other sources on most topics and I'll just talk to people who were at the event or check their blog posts, twitter streams, facebooks or other.

The photos you have here are just great. Keep that camera snapping. And I'll check the radio clips as well.
