  • Hard News: The file-sharing bill, in reply to Kracklite,

    Thanks Kracklite.

A millipede with OCD and a gatling gun couldn't shoot itself in the foot more often

I had a conversation with a local Labour Party committee member in Auckland who is in despair at the leadership. When grass roots members don't see leadership that is a huge problem.

I was bluntly asked who I think should challenge Goff

On the wider debate - To summarise so far..

    1. This is not as bad as the first version 2 years ago.
    2. Nat's using urgency to push this through is an abuse of process.
    3. Anyone voting National should be made to watch - Shanks, Lee and other Nat mps on this - clueless would be charitable.
    4. The Labour party is missing in action
    5. Technically unenforceable - or at least very difficult

Are there an PAS readers who would consider standing for parliament. We just have to do better than this.

  • Hard News: Popular Paranoiac Politics, in reply to Danyl Mclauchlan,

I like your thinking Danyl. It seems that focus groups and excessive “soundbiting” of political content has led to indecisive election results in UK, Australia & NZ in recent times.

The differences between parties A & B in each country have been so homogenised for public consumption that voters apparently flip a coin on the day.

When it comes to personalities and who gets to be the minister for the various gravy trains that is where the fun begins.

I would like Tanczos to grab the green party by the throat as I have not been impressed by the current leadership there. Rod Donald is sorely missed.

There is an element of Rip van Winkle about Winston Peters – he only wakes up during elections and the news that he has been seen in media suggests there is an early election on the cards. I did read somewhere that the Rugby World Cup may impact on the election time table.

As for Don Brash. Seriously he should think about his voting record. He was beaten by Garry Knapp (Socred remember them ?) in a 1980 election for a formerly held National Seat in East Coats Bays. He did have a couple of lucky moments later on but how much of that was luck and how much back room deal making we don’t know.

I don’t think we will see a new right ring party although I never thought I’d see someone like Sarah Palin taken seriously either.

  • Hard News: Wikileaks: The Cable Guys,

    Thanks Mark,

Fiji is on our doorstep and i dont now that full disclosure of all of the discussion around the politics would help.

I was being a bit facetious about the beaches but there are many reasons why it is better to sort out a workable scenario - govt to govt.

Sometimes a useful dialogue needs to be off the record.

  • Hard News: Wikileaks: The Cable Guys,

I'm pleased to see that the Guardian at least is attempting some kind of editorial filter on this. I do think there needs to be private and frank discussions and full disclosure of everything doesn't help anyone.

I do wonder how much of the embassey content is actually planted as misinformation & wishful thinking.

I posted about this below. I was wondering how New Zealand and Australia will look if / when discussions about the self appointed Fijian leader are made public.

Privately everyone accepts he is volatile and maybe not rational but realistically they have nice beaches and we still want to go there on holidays etc. so we need to be more circumspect and diplomatic in public.

    to leak or not

  • Hard News: Do you like what we've done…, in reply to Deborah,

Lets see how the nested comments look? - ok down the page - not nested - but can't have everything.

Having comments with posts is still a good move forward.

  • Hard News: Just pretend it's Friday already,

Good to see that Roger is using the free WordPress dot com service. Work in progress is the best way to go. I call it live prototyping and most projects can be live in a few minutes although we often password them for a while :)

Sola Rosa uses "self hosted" version from wordpress.org

    Sola Rosa Blog incidentally
(shameless plug alert here) for anyone who is exploring online websites, blogging, publishing, new media and platforms wordcamp.org.nz is happening in just over a weeks time at Unitec Mt Albert.

BrightMindLabs is another local site using WordPress. "Teaching Children with Asperger’s to recognize and respond to emotions" via a gaming approach. Fraser Hurrell from BrightMindLabs will be at wordcamp.

There are a good dozen non- profits coming along and as the event is very much user generated some will be presenting.

speakers at wordcamp As one of the organisers I very pleased that we have Richard Hollingum talking about the wider vision for TEDx Auckland.

Many readers will know Sacha Dylan who is also a presenter "encourage broadening ideas about who your audiences are made up of, drawing on some demographic data."

  • Hard News: Wanna Route?,

What a fascinating read. I reckon cycling is one of the best activities that parents & kids can do together. When cycling with the 9 yr old we go from Rocket Park on edge of Mt Albert along the cycleway past the golf course to Pt Chev and then out to Coyle Park or along Carrington Rd till we can duck into some side streets & loop back to Rocket.

There is a series of walkways from Cox's bay directly to Grey Lynn Park that most people don't know about. Also good for a few loops around the Coxs Bay park & Grey Lynn Parks at either end esp great for kids. An alleyway from Westmoreland off Richmond is the missing bit for most riders. There is another track between Sackville & Cockburn which gets you to the edge of Grey Lynn Park near Dryden St.

My personal favourite is up to Titirangi off the end of the Dominion Rd extension, via Green Bay & into Titirangi from the back. Coffee / brekkie in Titirangi & then back to the city via New Lynn or whichever way has the least traffic at the time you are riding.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned One Tree Hill park which is another good one for kids. It has the advantage of being paved but away from most of the traffic & in the city still.

  • Hard News: Paul Reynolds: A Contribution,

Very sad to hear the news about Paul. I first met him in the mid 90's after that book came out and we kept in touch ever since.

The last time I saw him was a few weeks ago. I gave him a lift downtown after an social media event we had both been at. The conversation was about mutual friends and mostly about what projects are next and what could he do to speed that up. That was him to a tee.

Over the years we talked about many planned projects. More often that not he was "the" person who linked a very wide range of people together and got many projects to the next level by encouraging everyone he knew.

    He will be sorely missed.

  • Hard News: The Honours,

Happy New Year's to everyone. Good to see that Fran reads PAS.

Doug Myers getting an award not so good but not a surprise. Luckily there were some people who got well deserved awards and that helps.

I don't believe any of the NZ public are really fooled or even that bothered by the high profile awards.

I'm looking forward to an excellent 2010.

  • Hard News: The Short and Long of It,

    Hi Hilary,

Yes of course - the people coming along are from incredibly diverse backgrounds and include Miraz Jordan, Jo Macleod (Hubris) , Robyn Gallagher and a fair few others well known here at PAS and elsewhere.

    http://www.givealittle.co.nz , http://ymediachallenge.co.nz/ and others

Wordcamp is as much about what happens next especially blogging and content management.

Yes there are platform related presentations but Steven Price is talking about Blogging and law. Doug Casement is talking about Media , Xero are talking about blogging in a business context and so on.

Last but not least WordCampo NZ is a charitable trust and non-profit set-up and run by volunteers.
