  • Hard News: Madness in Mt Albert,

By the way I've just voted for PA on the Net Guide web awards

Me too, but I wish there were fewer commercial categories and more public interest categories.

  • Random Play: Now, see hear . . .,

I know what you mean about people behaviour in galleries, Graham. One of the most odd experiences of my life was encountering the ten-deep crowd clustered around the Mona Lisa in the Louvre, all taking photos. All quite inexplicable to me, for the photo would be a rather poor record of I Was There. Meanwhile all the other treasures/pleasures seemed to be ignored.

  • Hard News: Madness in Mt Albert,

Despite the risk of derailing this discussion before it even gets started, is this a great day for mankind/womanhood? According to the Daily Telegraph, the Queen just sent her first email!

  • Hard News: Playing Nice?,

We've turned on a dime and gone for the swine in this week's Media7. The opening panel will look at the swine flu coverage

I had a call from a Waikato Times journo this morning, wanting my thoughts on the coverage. As I didn't have anything profound to offer (other than to say that it was a media story 'with legs'--some of them very wobbly), I suggested he follow the discussion here.

  • Hard News: There is History,

Do you think we can stretch to a Plague of Frog as well?

Well, I have heard that Wairoa and Gisborne have had terrible infestations of Acheta campestris (field-crickets).

  • Hard News: Dear Prudence,

Yes, John Drinnan does seem to be somewhat obsessed with you Russell. He use "taxpayer funded" as if they were dirty words. So, should we refer to the "taxpayer funded New Zealand Army" or "taxpayer funded hip operations"?

Media 7 was excellent last night. I did wonder, however, what was the source of the research which was being referred to continuously. If it is based on a secondary analysis of ratings data, then it is a load of crock. The oldest 'demographic' in ratings measurement is 55+, which is just absurd (a 75 year old male shares the same interests as a 55 year old female?)

  • Hard News: Veitch,

Can anyone recommend a good lawyer to do conveyance and to help me set up an owner operator business project, in Levin?

    You want a live-in lawyer?

  • Hard News: Veitch,

The maximum an ordinary teacher can earn is around 70,000 at the moment

Most earn considerably less than that, and strike a salary ceiling pretty quickly--then the only way up is the admin route. I am married to a senior teacher (Head of Social Sciences at a girls' school), and I am daily reminded how much harder she works than I, as an academic earning around $30,000 more. People always cite teacher 'holidays' but most teachers I know spend much of their non-contact time preparing, marking, running extra-curricular activities (debating, sports, drama, balls etc etc). I work to the so-called 'academic year' which is A and B semester, which is essentially 23 to 24 weeks of teaching (not every day) of any given year.

  • Hard News: It would be polite to ask,

Re the supercity and all that--did anyone see the Tom Scott cartoon in the papers at the weekend, along the lines of the rest of the country ignoring the plight of Auckland (viz "no. I think it is the wind"). Really low brow thinking from Tom, denying the fact that where goes Auckland, so does NZ.

As for the eskimo 'story', it is fairly banal. What is next under threat--Pinky bars (for their homophobia?) Or jet aeroplanes (because they are too militaristic)? This just gives more fuel to the tedious 'anti-PC" mob.

  • Hard News: Lucinda Williams made me cry,

I was back in row N for Lucinda and the best I could do was wriggle my bum around a lot. It was a tremendous concert. I could see Tim Finn a couple of rows ahead of me and he seemed to be enjoying himself. (I was crass enough to go up to him in the second break and ask for an autograph for my daughter, which he graciously provided--and which she is very pleased with!)

I had that catch-in-the-throat moment too--the song with the refrain "unlock my heart" (can't remember the song title). But there were puzzling moments: Buick 6 coming on unannounced and playing forever (although I did like their version of Marque Moon); the little huddles Lucinda got into with her minder; the music stand she kept consulting.

Thanks for organising the Thursday night soiree, Russell. I met some interesting folk.
