  • Hard News: Our new strategy is to FAIL,

To sidetrack this discussion for a moment (into another medium), I would be interested in postings about film festival offerings. I drove up to Auckland yesterday, to catch 4 films in a row (damn you Bill Gosden, for unfairly cancelling the Hamilton festival).

Mid-August Lunch, was charming in a slow and Italian fashion.
Afghan Star was wonderful (I have already used it in my teaching)
Moon was bloody good (shades of Solaris + 2001 + Alien)
Humpday was self-regarding tedium. People were chortling all around me and I wondered why.

2.5 out of 4 ain't bad. But then we experienced our own kind of horror film, trying to remember where I had parked our car in the SkyCity bowels. Found it after 50 minutes of searching! Who is the idiot who devised their parking system? Eventually got home at 3am, after driving through a storm. I might do another trip north at the week's end.

..and if I could take the liberty. If Paul Litterick is about, could you email me as I can send you a bunch of photos of an American presence NZ cityscapes from 1985.

  • Hard News: In the nicest possible way,

One more time: a great Media 7 last night--Pam Corkery, James Griffin, Bill, Hastings and yourself..

Would it be possible to take some of the students in my second year television course for an outing, to a taping of Media 7--in a couple of weeks, maybe? If so, how many could I squeeze in?

  • Hard News: Swine flu and swearing,

Swearing on TV: unfortunately Censor Bill has no jurisdiction, it's the Broadcast Standards Authority you should invite.

Quite so. They do occasional research on "Acceptable language: swearing and blasphemy on radio and television", trying to measure public standards. I did such research for them years ago--it was kind of fun asking people what they thought of the use of sh*t and f*ck and the like.

Still, Censor Bill is likely to be entertaining.

  • Hard News: .... and the Rock 'n' Roll,

Excellent Media 7 last night, Russell--even though there was possibly more marketing gibberish than my delicate stomach could handle from a couple of those magazine honchos. The next word to ban from public discourse: "monetarise"!

  • Michael Jackson: A Life?,

I've had this theory for a few years now that Michael and La Toya are really the same person

For a couple of years, in her more innocent days, I persuaded my daughter that Michael and Janet Jackson were the same person.

  • Hard News: Sunday blues, and we're on Sky,

the Living Channel (yes! I confess! I prolly watch more stuff on the LC than on any other)

(I think we have had this conversation before) ...full of gormless Brits buying up villas in impoverished East European countries. We had a game (until it got too irritating) of counting how many times a couple would say "nice" as they were trooped through yet another house for sale.

Still, the Living Channel (aka the Half-Dead Channel) almost redeemed itself on Sunday night, when it had a Time Team episode about digging up an old late c.17th railway viaduct in South Wales. I just love industrial archeology and Wales is just littered with it--as well as more ho-hum Roman ruins.

  • Hard News: Sunday blues, and we're on Sky,

What does freeview provide that sky doesn't these days?

None of the frequent signal loss "due to atrmospheric conditions"? A savings of $100+ monthly?

  • Hard News: Another entry in the Public…,

Just to divert the conversation away from medical matters, for a moment. I made tamarillo chutney yesterday, using your recipe Sofie. Very tasty. Used the very last of the fruit off our large tree, which I hope will survive the frost battering of the past couple of weeks.
