  • Hard News: Time to Vote,

Pleased to see Andrew's earlier comment about kids and voting. Had my 10 year old daughter tick the boxes for me for the third election running. Just like I used to tick the boxes for my Dad.

An important part of parenting in my books.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: Whine Festival,

I assume the professionals have this covered but are the stages in use simultaneously really far enough apart to avoid annoying mixing of sound?

  • Hard News: Friday Music: History, motherfuckers,

Heh. I remember playing lunch time soccer with Joel Little at Western Springs in the late 90s. Awesome when people you knew as a kid are super successful.

  • Hard News: The GCSB Bill: We at least…,

I am sure someone can clarify this issue, but it seems that the point of the GCSB Bill is to give the GCSB powers to do what the SIS and Police do now (rather than focusing on international issues). In that case why are we OK with the SIS and Police spying on us, but not the GCSB? Does the GCSB have much better technology or something?

  • Hard News: You can Roughan but you just…,

It's frustrating how "mode oriented" public transport debates often are. Buses, trains, ferries and even trams all do different things and it's almost certain we need all of them to complement each other and create a world class PT system for Auckland.

Take a look at somewhere like Vancouver. It has a relatively small rail system (similar to Auckland in terms of km and number of stations) but it's rail that does the real hard work of the system carrying around 140m trips (generally long ones) a year.

That "core" provided by rail lets Vancouver run an excellent bus system by letting buses do what they do best (shorter trips on lower demand corridors).

  • Hard News: The Waterview Bore, in reply to Roger,

Roger, yes the section from Dominion Road to Onehunga is very difficult and expensive. The section between Dominion Road and the Western Line is easy and cheap and with new stations at Stoddard Road and Dominion Road could be a really nifty little addition to the rail network - one that takes advantage of the capacity opened up by CRL.

    Something like this: http://transportblog.co.nz/2011/11/21/the-avondale-mt-roskill-spur/

  • Hard News: The Waterview Bore,

    A few comments:

    1) Yes the tunnel goes underneath the waterfall (maybe not directly) and underneath Oakley Creek. Very little impact there.

    2) The Avondale-Southdown railway line may actually be needed (or at least the western section of it) a bit earlier than was previously thought. It'd be a pretty cheap extension to the rail network post CRL that could generate significant rail patronage. So I think we should expect a two-track railway line through there in the future. Pak N Save is just outside the rail designation.

    3) Waterview Connection was always promoted as the "last piece of the motorway network". It will be particularly interesting whether that stays true over time or not

Also surprising that Brownlee doesn't want to do business cases for walking/cycling projects or for NZTA to investigate the economic impact of urban form from a transport perspective.

The "Levin to Wellington Airport" Wellington Northern Corridor suggests that there's a decent chance the Otaki to Levin section is/was part if that project.
