Pauline: Are you saying you had 3 and Prime recording, but you could not watch 1 or 2, but TVNZ 7 was OK?
This seems wierd.
Freeview broadcasts its channels via 3 transmission streams known as MUXes,
TVNZ have one with 1,2,6,7,sports extra on it,
While TV3 have one with 3,4 and 3+1, while the other channels Maori, Prime, Stratos, Chinese etc, all reside on the Kordia MUX,Recording off 3 and Prime, would mean tapping 2 of the MUXes, I would expect that you should not be able to get anything off the TVNZ one, but are you saying you could get 7, but not 1 or 2?
Sounds spooky...

TiVo at $800 is going to be flying out the door faster than the Panasonic, which has a rumoured NZD 2K price point.
Freeview will only really get going when digital tuners appear in all new TVs and Sky is forced kicking and screaming to allow Prime to screen.
(Although Sky's announcement it is going to kill its UHF service is a step in the right direction)

Keith: the kicker is the receiving a credit downgrade is not simply $hits and giggles, Treasury estimated that it would add $600 million a year to govt expenditure based on pre 2009 budget debt projections, which ceteris paribus would worth around 13 billion over the time period you are talking of out to 2031.
Plus, debt costs for the rest of the economy would also rise and that would not have a positive impact on other numbers in budget forecasts

re: getting past Ads
Russell, I think the key definition here is "fast forward",
Most PVRs allow you to jump forward a certain fixed period. (mine is 30 sec, so hit it 8 times and I'm over a 4 min ad break)
I worry that TIVO may drag us back to the world of VHS and having to visibly "fast forward" you way through ads.
But I await the final details with interes.

The agreement was the result of a request by Samoa to New Zealand for assistance, the Prime Minister said.
The agreement signed this week would give one further year of life to Air New Zealand’s LA/Apia/Tonga/Auckland weekly flight.
This link to the United States is “very important” to the tourism industries of Samoa and Tonga, Prime Minister Tuilaepa said.Late last year, Air New Zealand asked both countries to provide a subsidy of $NZ4.8 million (T$9m) each to keep the service going.
Both countries objected.Tuilaepa said the year ahead would be used to assess all aspects of the route including determining whether or not Air New Zealand was truly making a loss.
It also gives Samoa time to consider what the “fall back options” might be, he said.
“If the flight is a loss, then it shouldn’t be continued,” Tuilaepa said.

Now, the government has effectvely issued an edict to underwrite flights to two other countries. As I said, it's probably a good thing for those economies. But they've done it by jamming their hands in an already small cookie jar.
But wasn't the point you were trying to make that this Samoa deal was being done as a result of meddling by MFAT/McCully whoever?
The Niue deal was done years ago by NZAid on its own,and no one seemed to kick up a huge stink when that part of our aid budget was reappropriated, but now it is a problem ?
Additionally the Cooks Government have a similar scheme where they underwrite an Air NZ service from the US to Rarotonga, ($1.5 million US last year alone)

NZAID have been underwriting Air NZ flights to Niue for the past 4 years, so the extension of such a type of support to Samoa ( as I understand the move is) is not a move that can really be seen as political meddling .
The existing deal was made under the current arms length process

recently made the switch to using RSS feeds and a reader and find it much better than what I've been doing for years, which is regularly visiting some web sites. I use NetNewsWire, but that might be mac only.
I use Firefox, and put the RSS feeds on the toolbar as live bookmarks.
This means you can check them at your leisure and see what has been added before actually going to the page to check the item.

Not really, while the degree of leverage may be lower, the principles of having to pay more for something over a long period of time mean that other methods are employed to avoid the direct use of interest, but indirectly it is still there,
