  • Hard News: Music: Radio is still relevant,

    Thanks for that Russ! We're pretty rough, as you probably know, but we're having a great time. Funny thing is, people I talk to here in Nelson are always all "wow, that's amazing of you to do that, so cool for a dad to get involved with their son's interests etc.." when in actual fact, it's quite the opposite and I feel totally privileged that he's prepared to hang with his old man on a music show on the radio. Think about that for a moment, all his friends, gf etc... are all listening in, he's taking quite the risk of public humiliation (probably the worst thing that can happen to a 17 yr old boy) and yet he's given it a go and it works. I'm very very proud of him and don't for a minute think that I'm anything other than the really lucky one.

    In terms of radio, it's still a key way for me to hear new sounds from people I respect and trust. I'm a regular listener of Peter Mac's "Ring the Alarm" show on Saturday mornings but am restricted by the kids football season so tend to be a Spring to Autumn listener. His selection is superb and he's introduced me to a load of great material over the last few years.

    Can I also sing the praises of the mighty Beeb who don't geolock their audio like they do their television programming. There's almost unlimited goodness on there. I try to tune in to Gilles Peterson's Worldwide show most weeks on BBC. I liked his Radio 1 format better than R6 but the quality of the tunes is still the same and he's a crate digger extroadinaire. I also like Benji B's mix of hefty hiphop and late night beats to get me through Sunday evening's ironing dramas.

    Also, still with BBC, Toddla T is doing a Jamaican 50th Anniversary Special that will be available for the next week here. If you can get past Toddla's wite boy Sheffield/Jamaican patois the show will be a decent fun celebration of modern Dancehall. David Rodigan's BBC 2 50th Anniversary mix will be a rare treat as well.

    Oh, and the crowd singalong of Sierra Leone by Mt Eden Dubstep with my 16 yr old in the Boiler Room at BDO 2011 was a highlight. Didn't know anything about them but the young crowd packed into the tent sure did, it was levitating!

    Have I posted this one previously?

    We played it on our show and even if you're not a fan of the Wub Wub it's a great watch for the old school boardgame cleverness.

    Also, I spoke about Max Romeo on Simon Grigg's music site Extended Play this week;

  • Hard News: The Music for Occasions,

    My friend Pete Darlington approached such a birthday by choosing a track for every year of his life and giving his friends the mixtape, but he has a librarian's training and I'm not that systematic.

    Heh, that damned thing took 18 months and nearly killed me! I do not recommend... The best thing about it was that some mutual friends of ours daughter took ownership of it and promptly started getting into music. The list is here BTW.

    My Friday recommendations are the album Hierlooms by Dave Aju. Funk, house and electronic niceness, He constructed it from his jazz player dad's basement tapes of unreleased music. It's a joy to behold and my current favourite tune off it is "Until Then"

    Also, everyone needs to check out the John Lydon Capital Radio show from 1977 where Johnny plays favourites. It's available on Simon Grigg's Extended Play site and it is awesome.

  • Hard News: Friday Music: More Finding, in reply to paul mckessar,

    Doctor Feelgood fans and the idly curious alike should ring aunty for a copy of Oil City Confidential, Julien Temple's unbelievably great doco on these pub rock legends.

    Ha, a mate and fellow Dr Feelgood fan was raving at me about this just last weekend so it's already on the VHS list...

  • Hard News: Friday Music: This stuff works,

    Now, don't be hating on the Tate Modern, it's a great place. Just the Turbine Room alone is pretty awe inspiring.

    Anyway, speaking of Diplo, here's all his "Diplo and Friends" Radio 1 shows, kindly posted up onto Mixcloud:
