I was surprised to read in your blog that you felt it necessary to write that Chinese nationalism exists. I can't see how someone could think it doesn't exist unless their so blinded by their own preferred worldview they keep walking into their own reflections.

you might be right, but not all of us know china very well at all, and the mainstream media don't help. i thought keith's blog was a timely insight into what's happening in our NZ chinese community,

What is comes down to is that if we wanted rail at all...

Well, i wonder. has that been established, in some sort of economical/environmental analysis?

Rod Oram -- who's hardly a dirty right-wing tool -- raised some carefully qualified caveats that are worth thinking about on Nat Radio today. (Audio not on-line yet, but worth a listen when it is.)

audio's up now... shame i tripped over my headphones cable and ripped it apart. sigh.. better do some real work then

It would at least be worth looking at what we'd need to put in a TGV link between Auckland and Hamilton

    TGV is not cheap

i hope the govt will take this opportunity to look at how the rail system can contribute to our country's transport needs as a whole. (although, wouldn't it have been better to conduct the study before we lay out $665M?!)

if cullen doubts whether the rail system can be run economically, should we be running it at all? Or, if he factored in carbon costs, and a clogged up urban road network, would rail then be economical? Because if it isn't, why bother? Just build more busways and stronger pavements

To meld the two threads together, I've been told that Moore is part of a vast heterosexual conspiracy to remove gay people from the future. Star Wars, Star Trek, BSG, even Bab 5 - not so much as a camp cocktail.

oh, come on! C-3PO and R2D2 were more than just good buddies

But at the heart of the demonstrations is a persecution complex that many overseas mainland Chinese have developed about the way their country is perceived internationally. This made them ready and willing to participate in these counter demonstrations.

i think that's an important point. we often seem to be a bit too willing to assume the worst about chinese sweatshops and government.

strong stuff. i wonder if a generic kiwi whitey could've written this article without being accused of being xenophobic.

how do the chinese demonstrators reconcile living in NZ with their chinese nationalism? is it something like kiwis living in london, but doing a haka in westminster park? (sorry, trite, but i couldn't help it)
