Hard News: Haphazardly to war, in reply to
interesting or possibly very depressing take on this by Gordon Campbell
If one was a gambling person I would bet against the coalition doing the right thing at the right time, as this entire situation underlines in more ways than one
I am depressed we're sending a force, I am angered that our token effort to appease others is being touted as anything more than it is... the smallest amount of koha we thought we could get away with

Hamish you make it all seem so simple, so logical - we have committees to ensure this isn't so
I sometimes wonder if the "public" are as negative towards art these things get framed... ie how much public money is "wasted" on "insert derogatory term for piece of art"
I really like the work at New Lynn, sure brightened a drab ally that has heavy use

news of Steve Strange's passing today has me thinking back to my formative musical years... thanks to him and his peers I found the music of Frankie Knuckles many years later

Projections of future financial viability
exactly - we've seen this time and time again with the usual bullish projections and eventual cost overruns and poor performance passed onto the tax/rate payer - be it IT projects, rationalisation and re-organisation of an entity(ies) etc etc. Hardly rocket science to see through the bullshit... and yet it continues to happen

the same modeling that shows huge revenue spinoffs from hosting from sports and other types of events, govt surpluses and economic growth for the rest of time etc... ? The sort of research that is always reliant on leaps of faith - ie what was the convention norm at point x will be the norm in the future only bigger cause, growth?
If I wander around Auckland and can see several convention & event centres...
This was always going to be a white elephant that taxpayers or rate payers will be forced to prop up
-
I'm not sure there was ever a good case put forward for a new convention centre in Auckland - everything else was entirely predictable, if only it wasn't so...

I'm not sure there is any digital music service whose interface and workings isn't at odds with how any music lover would want - coders just hate music I reckon... worse as services 'improve' the interfaces generally get worse (spotify's sure has)
As for end of year lists, yep there's truckloads more music and less gatekeepers telling us through the year what we should like... powered by promo companies, record companies, marketing spends etc. The lack of music media as there once was and the spread and speed of the internet means culture screams past us where once it wandered, if you miss it its gone - quite dazzling and also liberating it all is
