  • Up Front: Eat Up Your Brothelly,

this column suffers slightly from having had some difficult last-minute changes made to it because of what I am almost 100% sure has been some heavy toning-down of the Pundit column. I could be wrong, but it doesn't appear to be today what I read yesterday.

    I'm sure you could ask.

    =)

  • Hard News: The Beautiful Pants,

The pants can be viewed online -- along with an array of interesting guests (including David Haywood) and much useful information and commentary

Was the Bronowski piece thanks to my repeatedly pimping it on PA system, or do I have too inflated an opinion of my linking abilities =)

A 20 year-old DJ slowed down Justin Bieber's 'U Smile' by 800%, until it lasted 35 minutes and sounded beautiful and amazing.

Slowing it down by 100% would mean it was stopped, right? So slowing it down by 800% must mean its backwards at 7x speed, right?

  • Hard News: The Creepy Party,

On Monday the country had an Associate Defence Minister. The Prime Minister had confidence in her. The Defence Minister had confidence in her.

Suddenly, not only has that Minister lost her job, but the job itself has disappeared altogether.

I'd like to know what happened overnight in the Defence Ministry to make this job suddenly superfluous.

This has actually been answered: the work she was undertaking as Associate Minister of Defence was largely on the value for money review (or something like that) and was basically complete.

  • Speaker: John Roughan is Scared,

Does anyone else keep reading the title of this post wondering why John Roughan is sacred?

  • Up Front: The C Word,

I went through student politics with a person who claimed to be working class because his mother was a teacher. We sniggered but he was adamant.

Teaching is unionised. Therefore working class. Certainly not a profession anyway. Something like that.

  • Hard News: Local Heroes?,

All we're getting from Labout is "raising GST is evil, but we're not actually going to commit to anything concrete like repealing it".

    Word.

I got an electorate mailout from Grant Robertson last week - it is quite clear that not only is Labour campaigning against all GST, they are also campaigning against there being any charge for electricity or rates and a bunch of other things as well.

  • Hard News: Local Heroes?,

I'm not sure John Banks being seen as a campaigner for social justice is all that amazing.

Really? Let's go back, say, two years...

I have very firm recollections of an interview Banks gave about this on, I think, National Radio, and it was quite clear that he did not support the moves being mooted.

  • Hard News: Local Heroes?,

does one have to quit parliament if elected to a local body post?

    No.

There's even an express provision in the Electoral Act that an MP who is absent because they've been appointed as an Ambassador somewhere and isn't in the country doesn't lose his or her seat.

    Become a public servant, however...

... protecting children from physical abuse... when will the madness of social engineers end?

The major problem a lot of people had with the social engineering wasn't that legislation was passed to protect children from physical abuse, it was the sales pitch that implied that 75%+ of parents were child abusers.

John Banks' amazing attempts to rebrand himself as a campaigner for social justice bear witness to that.

Given his outspokenness against various attempts to basically criminalise vagrancy is Auckland City, I'm not sure John Banks being seen as a campaigner for social justice is all that amazing.

  • Legal Beagle: Absent Members,

So an errant MP is found to be in contempt of the House ... and then what?
    ...
    (3) They have to pay a fine to the House (if the House actually has the power to fine, which it probably doesn't)?

I would note that the question of whether the House has the power to fine is likely different from the question of whether the House has the power to fine its members (or could give itself that power in Standing Orders).

Which isn't to say it has the power to do either, but the answers to the questions would be arrived at after taking account of different considerations.

  • Legal Beagle: Absent Members,

Now cue debate as to whether s.55 of the Electoral Act 1993 has overridden Parliament's historical privilege to expel its members ...

I take it you read Pundit...
