  • Island Life: What it don't get, I can't use.,

Agreed on both Key and Clark with regards to the films, but

I can't imagine Helen or John admitting to quite so lowbrow literary tastes. :)

Actually, a man who publicly picked Johnny English as his favourite film - not just a film he saw recently and which was good for a laugh but, you know, supposedly an actual enduring favourite - might surprise with his honesty.

Here's a possible Friday afternoon bit of fun: you are a media manager for Key (or Helen Clark). They've been asked to pick their favourite book, but they're too busy in Parliament and delegate the job to you. Yikes! What would you pick to convey the right image of your boss? Something local, not too edgy, not too niche? What would it be?

Key and Clark's answer when local movie site Flicks.co.nz asked "Notable NZers" to name their favourite and most hated movies.

I know I'm late to this, but ... **Johnny English**???

maybe more so that elron's where the leaders probably don't really believe ....

It's entirely possible that Scientology's leaders have come to believe their own stories. Don't discount the combined power of repetition, outside 'persecution' and unthinking sycophantic affirmation from sciborgs lower in the hierarchy.

Thank you. It's always good to touch base and work proactively to streamline processes.

    in a chronologically forward direction

Try "going forward" next time - all of the necessary pomposity and meaninglessness in three less words...

  • Hard News: A Taxonomy of Poo,

I've enjoyed the term 'poo label' as much as anyone, but 'snarl word' is a useful alternative that avoids scat yet captures the essential nastiness perfectly. Seen it widely used at religioustolerance.org and elsewhere. Jus' sayin.

  • Hard News: So far from trivial,

Over at you-know-where some are suggesting she was blackmailing him.

George himself was hinting furiously in that direction yesterday. I have no idea if his claim regarding the victim is true or not. My italics below.

Yet later it transpired that the money was paid after the victim's lawyers demanded $150,000 compensation from Veitch's lawyers. There are other names than compensation claim for such demands, but no one so far has bothered to look into that.

I'm intrigued by The Mote in God's Eye. Always willing to develop an alternate sci-fi obsession to Iain M Banks, whose last novel was a bit of a disappointment.

Back on topic: there is, predictably, a letter in the Herald praising Garth George's commonsense approach and blaming Veitch's victim for taking the money rather than reporting the incident. Sigh.

  • Hard News: A Taxonomy of Poo,

Just glancing at the SOLOPassion comments thread on this paper, I wondered: is "pomowanker" a widespread poo label, or is it something unique to Perigo et al?

  • Hard News: A Taxonomy of Poo,

Which is a roundabout way of saying that you should be comparing apples with apples. What's scary about the Kiwiblog right and associated poo-flingers is just how mainstream (for want of a better word) they've become. Whereas Marxist clades - the only people who use the language you gave as examples - are very much on the fringes of the left's conversations, trapped in their own little bubbles of ideological purity, schism, and denunciation.

I'd agree with that. Partly I suppose it's because the Kiwiblog right - or, as I like to call it, the lumpencommentariat - has more or less grown as a response to the realities of the last twenty years, whereas the hardcore Marxist clades have more or less been left behind by political language. Call them oxbow lakes left by a shifting river of public discourse.

Unfortunately, they're still trying to catch up to modern life, as a casual visit to UnityBlog often confirms. Personally, I have equal distaste for poo labels from both left and right, even if the throwers on the left are fewer, and their poo labels a bit ossified and crumbly.
