Bob Seger. The zedir of mediocrity.
Har har. Have to disagree though. Seasoned pro was Bob who wrote one of the best "on-the-road-melancholia" songs of all time:

It has dawned on me through this thread what a big influence listening to (and taping) Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 was on my musical education.
Not Barry ‘Dr Rock’ Jenkins?

These conjure up spiritual connection for me
Ahh yes, poor old George the diffident one who is responsible for possibly the lamest lyrics ever:
I look at the floor, and I see it needs sweeping.
Still my guitar gently weeps. As well as the worst chord change ever which you can hear around 30 seconds into this acoustic rendition of Harrison's "I want to tell you" from the Beatles' Revolver album:

I was ringing people and asking them around to hear it. It gobsmacked.
Simon, as someone said earlier in the thread the impact an artist has on an individual is an intensely personal and visceral experience which is unique to the individual and is dictated by that individual’s life experience and place in time.
So I guess you were primed for that moment like so many others apparently were. Perhaps it simply went over my head as I was too young to understand it as it happened and by the time I was old enough to understand the revolution I had become desensitized to its power.
Like you say, each to their own. (“but why can’t I see it, it’s so fucking obvious” I hear you say)

which has a lot to do with cultural context (unless you're some sort of modernist).
Fair enough. If you want to be fair, which of course I don't. Let's just say relative to the pop genre.

See, I love hymns and I'm a nonbeliever.
Me too. 'Jerusalem' is so absurd but so moving. Like this one too and sung beautifully by the French Canadian Queen of Schmultz:

Like when you dismissed the entire early Flying Nun canon as people who could barely play their instruments?
I should have been clearer. I would assert that you cannot promote the superiority of one genre over another, but you can compare relative levels of musicianship. In fact that is one of the few ways you can objectively measure musical worth aside from uniqueness and lyrical merit. (and maybe I was being just a teensy weensy bit provocative)
But 'Hotel California' is inseparable from its cultural context, surely?
Yea I suppose but it's also the culmination of the band's own evolution from its country rock origins to a more sophisticated and technically competent urban sound which I would argue complies with the tag progressive. And whilst the Eagles are a product of that era they are not necessarily reflective of it.
Can I ask whether punk rock changed your life?
No I had been indoctrinated into a different genre of music as a 10 year old by an older sibling, so Punk was anathema to me. I think Punk possibly had the most impact on mid-teens with no prior convictions... of the musical sort at least. ;)

I suppose I think your ‘that’s a conditioned response!’ argument isn’t that relevant here. It’s not as though all prog is being dismissed out of hand as worthless, for no reason. And hey, I *like* the fuckin’ Eagles, to Lebowski-ise the thread.
Yeah maybe. Perhaps it’s simply a case of me wanting to post the Thompson cover and making up a specious premise to fit. My sub-conscious is a mystery to me at times. Oops, gotta make dinner.

Amongst which audiences? I reckon Britney has more cred for a recent pop song.
Ha. Good point. In relative terms, more cred with forty-something self-deluded wannabe aficionados like me. (Actually, I have more respect for Ms Spears talents than most)
