  • OnPoint: Sock-Puppeting Big Tobacco to…,

I'm not really seeing anything to justify the headline.

ACT supports a law to entrench wealth with those who have it. Big Tobacco could/would benefit from such a law. More happen-stance, than sock-puppetry.

  • Legal Beagle: I heartily endorse this…, in reply to Kyle Matthews,

You wouldn’t tend to get a strong swing away from a government who then held onto power by forming a coalition with someone that was from the opposition – that’s happened under MMP.

That can happen under MMP. But it hasn't.

In 1996 there was a slight swing away from National, but a bigger one away from Labour, and National was substantially ahead of them and formed the government.

In 1999 there was a large swing to Labour, who formed the government.

In 2002 there was a swing to Labour, who maintained government.

In 2005, there was a large swing to National, and a small swing away from labour (0.16%), but Labour was still ahead and maintained government.

In 2008, there was a swing to National, who formed the government.

I’d prefer something I could use without having to let Adobe’s (or anyone else’s) proprietary, secret-source software do goodness-knows-what to my computer.

Will I have something for you!

This is not a broadcasting standards complaint. It doesn't mention broadcasting standards (cf. OIA requests, which do not need to reference the OIA).

  • Hard News: Complaint and culture, in reply to johnno,

My understanding was that TVNZ acknowledged that they had made a mistake, but Don took it to the BSA becaue TVNZ did not do an on-air correction.

TVNZ acknowledged a mistake, but declined to uphold the complaint: it was wrong, but did not mean the story breached the accuracy standard.

I say TVNZ should have both accepted there was a mistake, and agreed there was a breach of the accuracy standard. Noting that the on-line version of the story would have a correction added.

  • Hard News: Complaint and culture,

I posted an irate facebook comment, and was considering writing more, but then Brian beat me to it, better than I could have imagined.

  • Hard News: Angry and thrilled about Arie, in reply to Russell Brown,

It’s the one where the police explain that it took them six months to establish there was a defence of diminished responsibility, during which time they had to repeatedly refuse diversion because – wait for it – there was a defence of diminished responsibility.

Because there might be a defence, not because there was a defence.

They were astounded by the police’s actions.

As are we all. I was simply responding to your request for an explanation about diversion.

    On occasion, yes.
