  • Hard News: Five further thoughts, in reply to Rob Stowell,

I still think it’s a good idea. But a little dubious about how much it would raise, for a very long time.

I also think it's a good idea but it shouldn't be viewed as a source of revenue - more as a way of changing investment behaviour. Maybe some of those slum landlords would get off their arses and manufacture something other than reactionary windbag comments on interest.co.nz

all easy solved with known technology

So is it just you that knows about this miraculous technology or are you going to share it with the rest of the planet?

Your Nobel prize awaits... why do you bother with farming when you can solve the problem of climate change and make NZ the richest country on Earth in the process?

You probably know that there is scarcely a farm in the land that doesn’t need to double , even triple, its labour force if the land is to be properly cared for

I doubt very many people on here know that.
    I agree with you wholeheartedly.
However, as someone who is also reliant on the land for a crust, I don't see how it can come to pass without slavery or serfdom making a comeback. WWOOFers won't cut the mustard (nor the corn).

    What are your suggestions?

You forgot the sarc tag :-)

    So I did, thanks.
Now back to the greenhouse gasses - CO2, CH4, NOx - pollution or not? Something to change our current lifestyles to reduce the concentrations of? Or is it all a big conspiracy?

Diversify, people! And let’s try and persuade the government to join in

It would be great if that were to happen.
Why would they bother though? It's much easier to dig for victory. The mining companies even help you to get that unobtainium out of the ground (conditions apply - see the small print). Worked for the Lucky Country - what could possibly go wrong?

    "seemed to"

That's not so much your point as your raison d'être.

Labour never seemed to have any factions 1999-2008

After sharing a table with Stu Nash at a Labour fundraiser during that period I can honestly say that's not true.

Tourism is recreational pollution in my book.

But what type of pollution do you think it causes? Greenhouse gasses? or are you thinking of another type of pollution?

shit in rivers and methane it is then!

We can sort the rivers but the methane will still be an issue. We can't ignore that either.
I never said it would be easy...

    Tourism

At the risk of rattling Farmer Green's cage - this is the last thing we should be promoting. Encouraging even more unnecessary flights is totally the wrong way to direct our economic efforts.
Climate change is here. We ignore it at our peril.
