  • Field Theory: WTF(riday),

    @LegBreak

People throw full bottles of beer at Cowbell Stadium?
What sort of hedonistic opulence is that?

The owner probably just got carried away and biffed whatever he had in his hand at the time he Mexi wave got round to him... and then suffered hurler's regret.

I'm just glad it was a plastic bottle. I'm allergic to skull fractures.

  • Field Theory: WTF(riday),

but I've seen rink staff have to remove a dead octopus from the ice

You mean at a Detroit Redwings game?

When I went to the All Blacks vs Canada test here in the 'tron a while back, they threatened to stop the game if the crowd kept throwing bottles. Not really anywhere as classy as flying cephalopods...

What a cool name! I can easily see "The Flying Cephalopods" as the opening act for "The Rolling Stones"

Anyway, I took a (full) bottle to the head at Waikato Stadium that night (the bottle subsequently fizzed and burst its cap). Now that I have my WRFU issued mooloo-colours hardhat, I will wear it to all future games.

  • Field Theory: This one's for Don,

Why I hate Canterbury / Crusaders.
    snip...
Those stupid bloody horses at Crusader games

I quite like the horses, but it is probably Vangelis's 1492 theme song that I really like.

Last time they were up at Waikato stadium we sent out kids waving cardboard swords and riding on cute little stubby-legged ponies to make our southern friends feel welcome. Classic.

  • Random Play: Make It Easy On Yourself,

I had a trip to attend a meeting in (South) Auckland recently which finished early. Since I was off the clock, instead of just hitting the motorway back to the 'tron, I headed East. Ended up traveling home via Clevedon and the Hunua Valley (I think). Gosh! That is some beautiful countryside out there. Drove past many lifestyle-blocks/country-estates/pony-clubs/country-schools/community-halls etc. that I had never seen before. No cellphone coverage, no FM radio. Just used the sun's position to keep on heading roughly in the right direction. Hmmm, this valley looks like it heads South. Let's follow that and see where it goes.

    Wonderful.

Ended up somewhere familiar eventually and reluctantly got back on track for home.

  • Hard News: Everybody's vogueing on the…,

I don't mind watching the prime-time ads. Some of them have as much production value as the shows within which they are embedded.

Anyway, I need to know what extra cruft I can consume to absorb the jump in income caused by my recent tax-cut. There is no point in saving any extra money because WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!

  • Random Play: Make It Easy On Yourself,

This is just a theory, you understand, but you have reminded me that it is nice to to do a little thinking now and then, and share your work with others so they can improve it.

Or if you can't improve on it, at least admire its elegance and give the original thinker some glow of public appreciation in which to briefly bask...

  • Hard News: Proud Wednesday,

As long as Graeme wasn't doing it for commercial purposes, the license statement appears to allow him to make copies for personal use. As a shylock himself, I'm pretty sure he would have read the terms and come to the same conclusion(?)

Star Trek conveniently ignored the absence or variations in gravity inherent in space travel. Everyone had their feet firmly on the ground throughout.

    Ignored...NOT!

I give you the Artificial Gravity Generator (retconned admittedly)

I'm late to this thread as I've been away in the mountains.

I've been reading through and have loved the sound of the high-literature references as they all went whizzing way over my head...

However one part of a post did strike a chord that I can help with.

    @Rachel Prosser

We had watched some show about young guys cycling (don't remember what it was called, but it definitely wasn't dark).

This was undoubtedly the coming-of-age story Breaking Away, directed by Peter Yates (no relation, dammit!)

  • Hard News: Through the Looking Glass,

The gummint in Queensland gave my mate AU$1500 towards installing a solar hot water heater on the roof of his Sunshine Coast home.

@Blake Monkley from Noosa (up the road a wee bit from my mate), did you get the same deal?

The hours of sunshine they get over there probably make it more of an economic proposition, but why can't we have more thinking along those lines over here? Here is a bit of cash in the short term which will save you more money over the long term... and possibly save the country from having to spend capital to build extra generation capacity in the future. Everybody seems to get a win out of that...

    What is the downside?
