Thanks for the reply Leigh, I still haven’t been able to get through on that link

Hi Mark, you're welcome. The exclusions on the web must be a pain! I do have readers in China so presume that all is not entirely obscured! If you still want to find those photos you could try doing a simple keyword search for rushleigh and cranmer, and either of the two articles should come up straight away, well, hopefully!

On a lighter note I'm so glad to read, via Lilith's comment on this thread, that restoration of the Arts Centre is under way. News coverage of these important activities is patchy even within New Zealand!

That the Christchurch City Libraries administration continues to deliver such a vague and unsatisfactory service to the suburbs is really staggering and a cause for intense frustration. What exactly is the matter?! It's not as if what is required is difficult although it may require a significant shift in mind-set about how that service is delivered. As a former community librarian I know exactly the size and shape of the service that isn't being delivered and the article I wrote about it last April hasn't dated much at all. You can find it here: You know you're a librarian when ~ Sumner Library remains closed and you get mad!' And I know it's not just Sumner that is being neglected.

    You're welcome Mark!
Interesting to see how the views through the barriers change from month to month, thanks for the updates. The city is becoming unrecognisable. When I was in Christchurch just prior to the start of the demolition of Cranmer Courts I took some photographs of that, and of course it is now no more. The crazy thing was that it wasn't until I looked at the Google street view of Kilmore Street that I realised that one of the nearby empty sites was where the multi-storey building had been where my dad had worked. That was a long time ago, but it still felt spooky. It is spooky. The centre of Christchurch is becoming a city of ghosts.

Now to figure out how to upload more than one pic per post…

Hi Mark, post your first picture and then once it's published go back and add the next one by using the edit function. You have fifteen minutes to edit posts (I think!).

Yes David, I'm sure you're right about the unevenness of colours. I've looked back over some of mine just now, but a whole different and better story than with colour negatives, which seem to have a much shorter life even when they have been carefully stored. The one I've included here is one my dad took from our top balcony in 1970, using a big square format of about 2 by 2 inches, I forget what its called - wonderful subtlety of colour still in those transparencies... The view is out over the Christchurch estuary and Pegasus Bay.

  • Capture: Labour Weekend: Town or Country?, in reply to David Hood,

This is one of my late father’s slides from a box labelled “Hoar Frost”

Hi David, that image is a memorable one! I'm guessing it may have been taken somewhere in Central Otago? One of the excellent things I've found about old slides is that they hold their colour well - most of them anyway. I had some of my own father's scanned, from back in the seventies and the definition and colour was perfect. And some others that had got a bit grimy cleaned up perfectly - Photo Warehouse (Christchurch) has done this sort of thing for me wonderfully well. I have done a little of this sort of thing and know how much time, work and accuracy it takes to do that sort of thing well - argh! Hats off to you!
