  • Hard News: Denial,

I think so too. It bugs me that it's so un-PC to note that this was an unprecedented game.

If you don't count the test a few months earlier in Melbourne...

Bart's right re the backs. If the game had gone on for another 20 minutes we would still not have scored, and that was the biggest evidence of the folly of Smith and Henry.. Williams was simply outstanding in that match, but as a team they were awful; and that's how you judge a coach.

The only positive thing about that match was that it mean we didn't have to suffer the embarrassment of going out to England in a semi-final.

  • Hard News: Denial,

    Craig,

It is a very long list….

But if you’re at a Xmas / New year party with a lot of sports types you could do worse than slag off any national coach at the moment*

*Exception to that rule being Ricky Herbert. That’s soccer (sometimes called football)

  • Hard News: Denial,

Bart, well said on Braces. Although the missed opportunity to give him the flick earlier in the year compounds this disaster. Even worse in the cricket case, there was a clearly superior alternative.

Don, you’re right to point out that Blues team was a Fitz (and ZZ) led team. Once they left, and with Henry around, they went into decline.

But it’s the last minute changing of the criteria for reappointment that’s the real sin here. And I think that was Golightly and the Art Dealer’s main point on Saturday.

  • Hard News: Denial,

    KM,

Laporte was coach in 03 and 07; and got madder as time went on..

Dwyer was successful in 91; his side had deteriorated by the time he took them to a ¼ final exit in 95.

And of course Hart and Wylie were involved in 87, before presiding over the disaster in 91; Hart having a further crap-out in 99

Dick Best (Eng) 91 (I think) and 95.

South Africa change their coaches most years, yet they’ve got the best record of any RWC side..

Noizy, I challenge you to find examples from Henry’s past (Blues, Wales, Lions) where he has learnt from past mistakes..

  • Hard News: Denial,

True the coach of the 2003 RWC winning side had failed in 99, but the other 5 winning coaches had not previously failed; that is a totally spurious argument.

As is the argument that changing coaches every 4 years hasn’t worked before, so why not do something different??

If that’s all the pro-Henry camp can come up with….

  • Hard News: Denial,

Some of the hysteria coming out of Chch has been ridiculous, but lets face it, the reappointment of Henry has been pretty shabby...

Not so much changing the goalposts as hiding them

And I seem to recall some people querying whether a song about kicking a drug addiction was really quite appropriate

    Seems pretty appropriate to me.

BTW, I thought Bill Clinton used some awful Fleetwood Mac song?

One of the better ones I remember was actually by the NZ National Party.

At the first (and possibly only?) party conference with Jim McLay as leader they played “I can see clearly now the rain has gone”

  • Hard News: Farce About,

Wasn’t Clocks used as the theme for a recent movie adaptation of Peter Pen? Perhaps Key’s got some subliminal role model thing going on there.

BTW, I’d like to wish severe misfortune (like having to watch a National Party DVD) on whoever mentioned “Love lift us up where we belong” on here. I’ve had it running around in my head for a good half an hour now, and suspect it will be with me for the rest of the day….
