John; we don't always agree on everything but there are people who appreciate you raising questions about Sky's unfettered, unregulated place in the broadcasting landscape--asking questions which politicians seem reluctant to ask.

As the risk of being a contrarian, all measurements of readership, viewership, listening are estimations and extrapolations of what much larger populations read, watch and listen to--and thus subject to all kinds of reservations, cautions and limitations. For example, the Nielsen ratings are based on self-reported measurements of presence in a room where a TV set is on, which might be something very different from watching television

It is good to keep this discussion--and the lobbying--going. I had never heard of Foss before his appointment. How much does he appear to know about broadcasting?
I am doing a conference presentation at the What is Television? Conference in Portland in a couple of weeks, focusing on TVNZ's. 'celebration' of 50 years of TV in June 2010--which I believe spoke volumes about TVNZ disregard for anyone other than commerce,

It would be good to let this conversation run longer or perhaps have a Part II, We need a space like this that is not so topic-specific and thus longer-lived that most threads on PA,
I wish I had a camera when I transported my daughter + three 18 year old gals on a camping trip yesterday, venturing down winding country roads en route to Port Waikato (where the mighty Waikato empties into the Tasman Sea). Wild country and excellent rock outcrops, and then a cafe (the Nikau Cafe) in the midde of nowhere,Maybe I can take some pics when I travel to Portand OR in a couple of weeks.

I know the backstory about LDR but, just occasionally, popular music comes up with an achingly beautiful love song like this. Maybe we could all nominate our favourite--I would offer Nick Cave's Into My Arms

Because this seems a catch-all discussion, gathering up the threads of summer, a recommendation--went to a screening tonight at the Regent in Te Awamutu of the NZ film Netherwood, which the directors/producers are travelling around the country (having failed to find a distributor). A bit of a bloke's movie but well made and worthy of support, if and when it comes your way.

Capture: Roamin' Holiday, in reply to
A good book, though? Don't get to read many novels, except for old Graham Greene 'entertainments' (I have a collection of the old Penguin editions). Too many magazines to read or books to review.
On another medium, do go to The Descendants. A lovely, quiet and thoroughly grown-up movie.
