Generationally though, I suspect things will change. If you were never smacked as a child, never equated physical discipline with ‘being naughty’, wouldn’t the whole thing just be a bit foreign? In a world where being smacked was just a completely alien concept, wouldn’t it be more like “What the hell? Did you just strike me on my bottom with your open hand? What’s that all about?”
Yeah, but I don't think that "time outs" on your own will ever be an acceptable substitute in BDSM circles...

Great post David! It's a pleasure reading about energy alternatives, etc., from someone who actually knows what they're talking about!
You said:
I think we should keep an open mind on the nuclear energy option. That said, it has a lot of problems associated with it (I could write a very boring essay on this subject). It makes far more economic sense to exploit our renewable resources first.
I would quite like to see a boring essay on this, as I think it's helpful to keep reminding folk in detail why nuclear power is not currently feasible for NZ. (And I'm sure you'd find a way to make it interesting :-)
I'd also like to know more about the arguments for and against thorium reactors, which, from what I've read, counter most of the arguments made against traditional nuclear power generation. Other than the fact that the technology isn't quite there yet, are there any other gotchas with thorium, especially for NZ? I'm thinking longterm here. (I firmly believe we have lots of other simpler, cheaper options to pursue first).
Cheers,

Thanks for posting the link to the article - a fascinating read. I particularly liked how you intertwined the human interest story and the environmental story.
Also wondering if in the future, rising sea levels may cause sea water to wash into the lake rather than v-v...??
And will the current rhetoric about the importance of the environment, which is coming from all directions of the political spectrum these days, actually cause any policy change... we can only hope!

The five greatest children's television programmes of all time? I have to concur with Tomorrow People, and would add Doctor Who, Blake's 7, Sapphire & Steel, and Logan's Run. Hmmm... I'm detecting a theme here...
Not sure if they all consistute children's programs, but I did watch them as a kid.
Over the past year or so we've been working our way through DVDs of Blakes 7 and Sapphire and Steel and killing ourselves with the special effects - who could forget the Michelen Men, or the very frightening blob of light that slide along floors and up walls (they must have blown the budget on that one!).
To be honest, I'm not sure these were my favourite shows as a kid (I have a funny feeling it was more Mr Merlin, BJ McKay and his best friend Bear, and the Dukes of Hazzard) but these are the shows that I've remembered the most fondly.

Hmmm... I reckon some of the most influential NZ sites for me are the ones providing day-to-day convenience... online banking, the ird website for filing taxes so I don't have to find a stamp, local library catalogues,... the sorts of sites which remove the need for me to get my arse off the sofa :-D
These sorts of sites are ubiquitous now, whereas just 10 years ago we were all keenly anticipating them.
And of course PA - not just another blog site, but a place to explore what it is to be a NZer. Priceless.
Cheers,
Judi
