It's had a monopoly on the AKL market since the Auckland Star folded in 1991.
Hmmm, so people really do just sit back and accept shoddy journalism because there's nothing else? Why, though? Even if there is no easily accessible mainstream source of unbiased, rigorously researched, properly edited news, wouldn't it still be better to stop buying the Herald?
(Sorry for harping on this... I'm strangely intrigued by it. Once again, I hasten to add that I'm not fishing for an argument; I really am ignorant about this, being so far and so long away.)
-
Why do people support (by buying) the Herald when that is its standard of journalism? Is it because there's no better alternative?
Being overseas, I don't really know the general sentiment in NZ when it comes to things like this.
(Also, sorry for asking basically the same question as I did in the 'Garbage In, Garbage Out' thread... it's just that I really can't understand why people would put up with it.)

Thanks for those replies, Sofie, Ben, Marc, et al.
but it seems to require resources to do investigative journalism, and takes time and COSTS
True, true...
In that case, let me re-phrase my question: Is the idea of a news outlet providing a higher standard of journalism for a higher price a viable business proposition in New Zealand? I guess I mean: Would the majority of people value good journalism enough to pay more for it than the current options? -
Can I ask a question? I've been overseas for a long time so it's hard to gauge the broader sentiment in New Zealand...
The lack of ability or will among the media to hold politicians and officials to account has been a constant theme here on Public Address, particularly since the Dirty Politics story broke. So, my question is this: Is there not a mainstream market for proper investigative journalism in New Zealand? If, for example, someone set up a new newspaper, TV news venture, or some other form of news, would the general population not support it to the same level as the existing mainstream media?
[Sorry if that's a no-brainer. I really have been a way for a long time...]

Johnny Cooper profile is now up on AudioCulture
One part of that write-up makes me laugh: I know it's just a spelling mistake, but the part about...
Cooper [...] visited Korea as party of a concert party entertaining New Zealand troops
...makes it sound like everyone else was the concert and he was the party.

the death of nzmusic.com
Yeah, I've always wondered what the story was about the very sudden decline of NZMusic.com.
One day there were a bunch of us yapping away in the forums, and then suddenly the format changed and you couldn't find anything, and everyone just left.
Was it a change of management, or what? It just seemed to stop dead in its tracks.

I chose the donation option because, like Moz says above, the foreign currency transaction fees can get pretty hefty in a subscription arrangement.
Still, I'm happy to contribute. (Only a modest amount this time, I'm afraid.)
Public Address is all kinds of good.

Phillip Schofield. I have no idea why, almost thirty years on, I remember that guy's name, but there you go...
