Who was adorable! (I was reminded a little of the Ray Davies Storytellers-type show I saw some years ago.)
Adorable, yes, in a 'Grandma sings Rockabilly' kind of way. Her voice is certainly noteworthy, but I lost count at about 50 Elvis name drops, and when she yodelled, and found Jesus in the same night as trying to think of as many Christian approved euphemisms for 'I shagged Elvis', it lost some of it's appeal for me.
Loved the music, and her Jack White produced B-Side Shakin' All Over* was a stomper, but there was something missing. A gap in my life that I couldn't quite fill. Maybe I needed to let the saviour in?**
*Vince Taylor's version not too shabby either.
**Sorry, this should be on a music thread. -
Alternative title for this thread?
Can't We All Just Fucking Get A Shlong?
Getting coat now. -
OK, Jack, I am going to note several things in Wanda's defence:
1. She dated Elvis Presley!!! If I dated Elvis I would mention it every other sentence. I would be like Robbie Krieger talking about Jim Morrison. It's fucking ELVIS, man.
2. People who don't like yodelling are... wrong. ;)
3. I don't believe in finding Jesus myself, but hey, it's her show. Plus she chose one of the best songs ever to illustrate the point: Hank Williams' 'I Saw the Light'. I dig a whole lot of religious music even if I don't go along with the message.
(PS Also, she reminded me of my husband's late and much-missed Texan grandmother, so I'll forgive a lot of Branson-ism.)

And why not -- big fat lie that the Devil has all the best tunes. :)

Oh indeed.

Danielle: oh, damn--just when I thought we were music soul-mates. Yodelling should be regarded as a crime against humanity ;-)
-
Danielle, sorry if I rained on your parade, but it just wasn't quite as Rock 'n' Roll as say Neil Young, Iggy Pop, John Cale, or other 'Icons' I've seen in the past ten years. I don't have a problem with her religious choices, or her gospel singing, it was just a lot of little things that added together bugged me a bit. But I won't be Crying in the chapel.
Come to think of it, where was that list of homoerotic movies? Elvis poll dancing, FTW?

But... that's a whole different generation of musicians. She comes from a totally different context - she's a southerner from Oklahoma in her seventies, who grew up steeped in country music, singing rockabilly. It's a different kind of badassery altogether. I think you make an unfair comparison by saying she isn't 'as rock'n'roll': she's probably one of the *purest* expressions of rock'n'roll there is. I think her early stuff still sounds really raw and primal (and, to bring it back to the feminist part of the thread, yay for the ladies rocking out!).

and just like that, Lealand is off the Topp Twins christmas card list...

Y'all! I am indignant!
(I wish I could yodel.)

I liked this review of her work at Nae Hauf-Way Hoose.

Hmm, can I flipflop, just for the sake of not pissing Danielle off?
Did I say I didn't like her music? I had read a lot of the history and had very high expectations (including buying the $20 single). Yes I can appreciate how incredible it is for an 'Oklahoma Mama' to sing Fujiyama Mama, Hard Headed Woman and other songs of this ilk in the 50s. She deserves all accolades and much respect.
While some moments captured all of this, others, not so much. You're probably right that I shouldn't compare her to Neil Young and co. How about Kylie Minogue?
[Coat.]
PS
I liked this review of her work at Nae Hauf-Way Hoose.
That was interesting, if a little unexpected.

Dude, I'm not actually peeved. I just think some of your criticisms were contextually invalid. Or something.
-
contextually invalid
I might actually put that on a t-shirt.

InvalidYou're right, of course. Or something ;-)

Did someone call for a contextualising invalid?

As this couldn't get any better, I'm going to go sleepy byes now.
Love your work ;-)

Not a fan of yodelling in general, and then the Topp Twins do it, and I think I love it. And not a fan of any form of country music but then the Topp Twins sing it, and, once again, I love it. I love the Topp Twins. Passionately. And that brings yodelling and feminism together very nicely, I think.
-
Speaking of contextual validity, everything the Top Twins do is solid gold, so I wouldn't care of they yodelled while poll dancing and singing gospel.
Hmm, maybe there is a line one shouldn't cross.

I interviewed a yodeller once. Having seen it, ah, up close, I am not a huge fan.

echoes of the clone ranger...
grrr - double double
classic case of being beside oneself...
;- )
going down the gargler...?
well yodel is close to yokel
which is pure country......what about those throat singers?
no falsetto there, it's the real thing...poll dancing
isn't that what Banks, Brown and McCroskrie
are engaged in?
