She is such a damn idealogue
Worse, a dim ideologue.

I have spent the last couple of days tidying/changing the back garden.
Yes, Sofie, what Geoff said - what a beautiful garden. I love your canine bandana wearer.
Anne Tolley - and National in general - are keen on streaming kids early in academic assessment, but for what purpose is anyone's guess. If they were testing health (dental, nutritional etc) they would advance academic achievement much more.
On a related note - well it's education - my sister runs a school in Kathmandu (Shree Dvip Mangal) which is one of Jane Goodall's project schools
Roots and Shoots South Asia Partners
here's a
Video Portrait of the School (made by the kids)
and was just invited by the Prime Minister of Bhutan (along with a bunch of other educators)

I have knocked out two holiday blog posts, based on no more than reading stuff on the internet.
The first is here:
I'll post the second, more provocative, one tomorrow.

Thanks. I haven't quite finished, but moving a few steps has redefined it better and as everything grows and the change of seasons occurs it's my never ending story. The front is my project in the new year. It has become a jungle and needs some weeding. So I put a few more photos up. Trying Picasa instead of flckr. Here's the link again if interested.
Stella is our wee dog in the photo. -
Stella looks very comfortable in her garden.
Digression: I knew a guy in Canada who called his cat Stella (a former stray cat) so he could stand on the stoop of his (downtown Vancouver) apartment in his undershirt and yell
"STELLA! STELLLLAA!"
and when the little cat came barrelling around the corner, he'd plop food in her dish and say, to whoever was passing:
"She has always depended on the kindness of strangers."
Eventually Stella moved into his apartment and they could no longer play out that particular scene.

Awww. That could almost go on the Love stories thread.

"STELLA! STELLLLAA!"
My man had always wanted to do that so the perfect opportunity arose when this girl was born just before xmas 10 years ago and we went up north for holidays, and there she was in need of a home, and since our dog had just gone, well, missing,(her name was missy) there was our solution to both dilemmas, STELLLAA! :)

As an early teenage Southerner (via an early start in Scotland) I found Auckland an, interesting, place. The shallowness you describe was present in the late '70s. Mind you that you had to go all the way South to go fishing is an indictment. As a teenager in Auckland I fished both harbours regularly. Last time I was back the BiL took me out on the Waitemata and I managed to catch all the fish. We even swapped sides of the boat but I continued to haul them aboard by myself.
Also technically you only hunted. Gathering is for eg going and getting your own mussels instead of buying them in the supermarket. Or ditto wrt mushrooms or sundry other comestibles freely and deliciously available in the wild for those with the gumption to seek them. I can recommend the wild strawberries here in Scotland, though they are never numerous enough for more than the odd delightful morsel. The blaeberries aren't bad either. I haven't been fishing here, its a bit different where you can etc but I know people who do so fresh salmon and trout are not uncommon in the house. You cannot buy food as fresh as that which you hunt/gather/grow yourself.
