Interestingly, I found myself telling people at Locally Left tonight to stop obsessing about external conspiracies in the media. While there might be structural influences on the content, basically it's people who make it.
It kind of helped when someone pointed out that Kiwiblog readers are convinced that the the Herald is a left-wing rag ...

Perhaps you need to publish verbatim Cook's version of events and any corroboration of information passed up the chain...Fair enough. From my perspective it was publishing something from a journalist I respect, to rebut some wild claims from a journalist whose work has actually hurt innocent people.

Yeah, I know. I don't blame journalists so much as the owners and the editors. And where there are bad journalists, that's largely the fault of the latter too, for employing them.

I'm willing to forgive everything to the NZ newspaper business if they start running every day this picture (originally from this article). Then at least they will be like the proverbial clock that is right once a day.

John Roughan doesn't do politics, but a column that spins like an out of control merry-go-round between insightful and dumb as a bag of rubber hammers .
but there's fine work in the NZ print media every week. You can't just dismiss the whole field.
Fair enough, but here's the other side of the coin. I don't make a living being a media junkie anymore, so I don't have the time (or the money) to hope that, this time, the Sunday papers are finally going to have the crap-to-quality ratio at a level I can live with. Hell, I don't expect Watergate on every page but could I at least feel a little less "Hang The DJ" about it all...

Though Roughan's one of those commentators I occasionally find myself agreeing with - far more than that cyclist hater Rudman. He just pees me off...

I think it's that the attack is so blatantly unjustified - someone suddenly going off their nut over the kind of tragically routine comments that the Fire Service makes every week about house fires.

It really shouldn't -- when The Poundster was sitting in for you on Media 7, the one useful part of the otherwise painful interview with John Tamihere was his admission that he just says shit to get a reaction. I've got to wonder whether Laws believes even half the shit that comes out of his mouth, but it gets a reaction -- all that matters.

Whereas I think the writing of Kerre Woodham is designed to do just the opposite. She probably has lots of outrageous and offensive opinions that she keeps to herself.

She's nice, really. I know she's struggled in the past when she's had to fill in for some of the stranger hosts. Apparently Leighton Smith's listeners get quite angry if they feel they're not being told exactly what to think.

I never heard her on the radio, I know her only from her columns which I read sometimes when I wonder what it would be like to be in a vegetative coma. She writes nothing like nobody else I know.
I'm sure that personally she's very nice.

Remember when she was maitre d’ at whatever Hummingbird was called in the mid-90s?She was magnificent then; specialising in hilariously cutting put-downs aimed at young bankers out on the Credit Card.
I’ve listened to her a bit on talkback, and while she’s good, I wish the old Kerre would come out.

I understand that now but I didn't get that from reading the post itself, only from your comments afterwards. Which is why I prefaced my original criticism by saying it's hard to tell which of the protagonists is the fool and which is the fool's company.

So what penalty can the BSA actually give? M Laws (okay Micael Lawhs) gave his statement this morning as ordered. He made a big deal about not offering an apology and he would see what BSA would do. On a quick look at the decision the BSA had not asked for an apology anyway, just a statement outlining the decision so the BSA probably can't do anything more with this particular complaint.
