For those who can't wait, you can look at the inauguration here. Sort of.

On the 'goodbye to Bush' tip, I rather liked David Letterman's farewell to his Great Moments in Presidential Speeches segment:
-
Thank goodness & the USA voting public that Shrubya will go into oblivion. But - not total oblivion: we really need to remember these last sickening 8 years - all the world, all of us.
Awaiting the coming day-

Sarah Hepola's story on Obama memorabilia for Salon is bloody funny:
The other day, curious how far the Obama madness had spread, I Googled the words "Obama sex toy."
God bless America: I was not disappointed.
"You love your candidate. Let him love you back!" gushes the Web site for Head O State, a 7-and-a-half-inch commemorative dildo. ("I bought two," reads a fake endorsement from George W. Bush, "emission accomplished.") The product comes in gold and blue -- not black, oddly enough -- and features the likeness of our president-elect grinning like a Cheshire. How about that for a stimulus package?
OK, so, the Obama dildo looks about as titillating as stuffing a carved zucchini up your cha-cha (who knows? could be grand!). But I have a funny feeling that whoever is actually shelling out $34.95 for this bad boy isn't investing in their sex life as much as their curio cabinet. It's a measure of the richness of our great nation that we can memorialize the election of our 44th president in such a multiplicity of ways ...

Apparently, despite being the President for sunshine and roses, he's not going to be able to rid the world of crocs. Dammit!

I just discovered via CRN that there is a citizen’s briefing book where people can post their own suggestions to President elect Obama.
Thank you for sharing your ideas on the issues facing the new administration. Over 125,000 users submitted over 44,000 ideas and cast over 1.4 million votes. The best rated ideas will be gathered into a Citizen's Briefing Book to be delivered to President Obama after he is sworn in.

Is anyone else here as totally-US-politics-nerdy as me, and setting an alarm to watch it live?
-
Alarm? Help me out here: what time is this thing?
-
Coverage starts TV3 5.30am NZ time. Obama sworn in approx. 6.00am. Hope we don't miss Aretha.
-
Well, the MySky guide seems to have things kicking off on various channels at 5am. Although I'm not sure whether that's a lot of hoo-ha and the actual ceremony is some time after that...
-
we get it about midnight so it's pretty good timing for us (I'm a night person by habit).
And to make it even better, I get to NYC next Weds, and as much as I'd like to be there now, I think it's a pretty decent time to be arriving.

Sworn in at 6 and then speech? I can handle that. The smart money is on the youngest member of the family dragging me out of bed not long thereafter anyhow. I can surprise him and beat him to the punch for once.

That's not okay, Giovanni.
The actual inauguration is on around midday EST. I've got to be on campus at 9AM, and it will be interesting to see whether the undergrads are more excited about Obama or the fact that the Steelers are headed to the Superbowl. Probably the latter.

That's not okay, Giovanni.
God I'm slow today.

This is the schedule, as per The Herald:
2am Gates to the Inaugural Ceremony open, Obama attends a church service.
4.30am Senator Dianne Feinstein provides call to order and welcome; Invocation by the Rev Rick Warren; Aretha Franklin performs.
5.30am Vice president-elect Joe Biden sworn into office.
6am Obama takes the Oath of Office using President Lincoln's Inaugural Bible.
6.05am Obama gives address.
* Poem by Elizabeth Alexander.
7am Obama escorts outgoing President George W Bush to a departure ceremony, throws a wet blanket on him, starts working his stomach while the secret service beats him around the head and neck.
8:30am The 56th Inaugural Parade sets off down Pennsylvania Avenue from the Capitol to the White House. -
"7am Obama escots outgoing president"etc.
Bugger. I'd hoped a commemorative waterboarding was going to be the departure ceremony of choice.
-
God I'm slow today
You think you're slow - I thought "2am - that's a bit early for church."
-
Not a terrible speech, but lots of platitudes and cliches, so now I guess we wait.
Righto..time to go to sleep.
-
He messed up the oath. Cute.

Not a terrible speech, but lots of platitudes and cliches
I actually thought the speech was pretty hard-edged in comparison to his pre-presidential, 'don't frighten the horses' speeches. Many implied 'Bush, you totally suck and here is why' moments in there.
(He also mentioned atheists. Baby steps, I suppose.)
I seriously could not be happier to see Bush disappear in that helicopter. Godspeed, douchebag.
-
Invocation by the Rev Rick Warren
That still rankles. I'm all for outreach and "inclusion", but they couldn't have found an evangelical preacher who isn't quite such a douchebag, and prone to lying about it?

For anyone not geeky enought to get up and watch it, the text of Obama's speech is here.
