"The sky is blue!"
"Yeah, but grass is green!"
"No, the SKY is BLUE!"
"God damn it, GRASS IS GREEN!!"
"BLUE! BLUE, I TELL YOU!"
"GREEN! WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU!"I think I've got the hang of this - can I play, too?

Wow. Josh just summarised the internet.
-

No. You can only play if you are conversant with at least the basics of endocrinology, biochemistry, clinical chemistry, histology, physiology, cardiology and epidemiology. ;)
-
You forgot postmodernism there, Danielle.
-
He did. Where's our host? - get that Josh a reward of some sort.
-
Damn not refereshing before posting.
-
Oh yeah. And feminist theory. And medical history. Actually, it occurs to me that there is literally no one fully qualified to take part in this conversation.
Last one out turn off the lights!

Josh, there is a Burger King voucher for you at reception. Just show them your B Card

WH,
Thanks Sofie - I was concerned that I may have interrupted a worthwhile discussion with a reductionistic summary. Some days you are the People's Front of Judea, some days you are the Judean People's Front.
-
Splitters!
-
Thanks Sofie
Why WH you are mostest welcome. I was actually trying to agree with everyone without sounding ignorant because I know it is many things, and there you were lurking for I don't know how many pages but all in all what you wrote was beautifully put. I work with someone very experienced with this field, and often tells me I am a bit fatalisticish but an underlying wish to understand and "do the right thing" I know is what drives her and she is brilliant. It is all very fascinating to me and I am priviledged to be privy to her studies. One of the first things I learnt was the difference with pacific island people. The supermarkets cater differently in different areas and predetermine what is affordable or available in certain areas but at the same time will power could solve that so it goes round and round and round so c'est la vie!

I think it's quite inspiring to find people who combine excellence with a passion for helping others.
Russell has mentioned it before, but I enjoy reading the views, experiences and expertise that teh readers bring to these discussions. I like it when the discussions turn into a collaboration, with people with different points of view contributing what they know, or finding out about things they care about and reporting back, and such.
There's a really interesting conversation to be had about the factors that contribute to weight, and how often do you meet people who'll talk about endocrinology or the cultural aspects of obesity with you.

Exactly, WH. It's a rare thing, these days, I find, that people think about the complexities around most subjects.

The prison of poverty? in a welfare state?
-
That same prison inhabited by many. Those who never earned enough money to invest anything for retirement. Who likewise shed sweat and tears throughout their working lives. The employers retirement may now bear comparison to that of their employees.

I saw this news story today, in relation to Ben's comments about there always being enough food.
Insane. Capitalism does produce some stupid things sometimes.
-
Obviously I am merely a naive hippy incapable of understanding The Ways of the Market, but surely they could give all that to some hungry people who like kiwifruit. Instead of destroying it. Right?
-
Clearly Danielle, we have a lot to learn about such things.
-
Ah, but the argument then would be that it would obviously further depress kiwifruit prices if the product was available free to some people, so the fruit needs to be taken permanently out of circulation.
Very simple and completely insane.
-
They could try using it as promo/giveaway stock in a country that doesn't eat much kiwifruit, opening a new market.
or
They remake a movie, perhaps some historical epic like Troy or Braveheart, starring kiwifruit...whole armies of kwifruit. no CGI.
or
remarket them as biodegradeable hand squeeze stress relievers.
-
Dude, I have actually had less passive-aggressive crap from people I have seen naked. Could you, perhaps, save this sort of thing for people *you* have seen naked?
Totally missed this thread, so glad I reviewed it and found this - goddam that's funny.
-
re the kiwifruit thing, this is not the first time the industry has moved to take excess fruit out of the market. i just think they should be obliged to come up with methods that have positive benefits apart from shoring up their market. i.e. how much ethanol could be produced using a million trays of kiwifruit? could it be used to offset fossil fuel usage? if they are going to compost the fruit, it should be done to achieve maximum benefit. and finally, as mark pointed out, they could ship it (by ship) to places in the Pacific that currently do not buy any (or hardly any) kiwifruit presently, and give it away as a promotion. Maybe private donations and NZ AID could chip in for the refrigerated shipping and storage costs?
@Mark:
biodegradeable hand squeeze stress relievers
LOL!
