  • Sofie Bribiesca,

Plus! All the Rugby teams end up down around the Hilton or between Show Girls and the Hilton anyway.:)

  • Mike Graham,

Is there any hard information that there are Cruise Ship visits associated with the brief window of the Rugby World Cup?

The information here doesn't quite make it to the Rugby World Cup months:

Adrian Chang at Business Day (Fairfax) tries to get into Party Central, gets turned away:

Is it too late to let Japan host the thing?

  • Kerry Weston,

    From Simon's link:

Equally mysterious was why the ARC would spend $20 million to half fund the purchase of the wharf from its own subsidiary Ports of Auckland, and then expect another council to develop it.

"Queens Wharf has always been owned by the public, so why there's now $20 million being spent to take from under one umbrella and put into public ownership under another umbrella so that it can be opened up to the public, is a bit of a mystery," said Hay.

    What is that about?

  • Damian Christie,

I'm a bit late to this one sorry, but I did have to add, is it just me and my Wellington-hating ways, or is the Wellington waterfront area actually just as shite, David? I'm referring to the whole Queens Wharf Event Centre and shopping mall - I was there when the latter was opened with a great hoopla - but no-one came, the good shops were replaced with shittier ones and I'm not even sure what's in there these days. Anyone?

That Queens Wharf section has its moments, but it's hardly a cohesive example of a public space that's well utilised by the populus on a regular basis. The biggest problem in Wellington I thought was that there was no covered walkway there from Lambton Quay, essential on those rainy days. It's something Auckland would do well to consider too, especially as it rains more and heavier up here...

Got retro-fitted into Shell's corporate HQ, and there's still a few cafes etc. on the ground level.

  • Hilary Stace,

The Queens wharf event centre development happened when the ownership and governance structure of the area was different. These inappropriate and ugly buildings were part of the reason that Wgtn citizens became more attentive and demanded more input.

  • Gareth Ward,

Jeez, you go away for 6 days and your city becomes party centrale.

And I'm sorry, but... I like the $14m to do up the sheds. Any building there should evoke it's setting and those basic shed outlines do that. $14m gets you quite a lot of do-up and their placement on the wharf is about right (nice big open space in the NE corner where the views up the harbour will be and clear, defined space from the ferry terminals up to there. although I'd shrink that NW shed a little). I know of a couple of excellent young architects who would make that layout/space pretty dang awesome for that sort of money.
Link the whole thing over to Britomart (both transport and developing "urban centre" with either a bridge or decent crossing system (Joshua will have better views on that I imagine) and it could work.

    It depends entirely on:
    - seeing it as a long-term Auckland asset, not just a RWC thing
    - who gets the design contract
    - what hand the council Urban Design guys have in it
But I'm tentatively hopeful that we might get a decent space out on our waterfront
