3410,
I just don't even use iTunes at all (unless I have to get an iPhone software update). It takes so long to do anything, and I'm terrified that it will get a bee in its bonnet and 'sync' something I don't want it to and poof, there goes my 160GB of music. I really hate it.
What then do you use, D?

Erm, Winamp. I sort of have the feeling that people are snickering up their sleeves at me now. :)
-
Nah, Winamp has old skool credibility. Just tell everyone you are still using version 2 or something
I barely use iTunes now, although it is still my main music software organising programme on a computer. I have mainly used my various phones over the last couple of years for music playback as they have reached the good enough point.

Awesome. Do you "burn" CDs too? ;-)
-
Yep, never abandoned Winamp. I love how it cannot calculate the length of the tracks in your collection unless you scroll over them on the list. Awesome.

It does seem clear that iTunes is consistently shitter on non-Apple platforms, possibly because it relies on QuickTime, which is integral to Mac OS, as the media layer of the operating system -- but is still something of a foreign body in Windows.
Still. I had to use Lotus Notes for the Mac, and Word 6.0. This is payback.

Je-zeus!
Winamp! Amazing how software can bring the same sort of nostalgia as an old kitchen appliance. Oh, sorry, that may sound a bit patronising. I still use my old kitchen appliances, if that helps. ;-)

Until I stumble on something else that docks & disappears at the edge of my screen (I have the player at the top where I can just see the position marker creeping along, playlist down the right) Winamp has me.
Helps that it's portable - any time I reinstall Windows I can just copy the folder back in and take moment to set up the file associations :)

Maidenhead revisited...
a chance to road test this bad boy...
It kind of looks like a motherboard, doesn't it?
yeah, and it's got all those network ports in the back there, what I'm not seeing is the pylon line heading in, or the substation, ya don't think its running on batteries do ya?
and did North Carolina do a deal on the power like Comalco did here?
well they did do tax incentives
Sleepy ol' Startown Road, Maiden, NC won't be the same...
500,000 square feet, 50 full time employees
- why that's 10,000 sq feet each! -
3410,
Erm, Winamp.
Me too; 11 years and counting, but I meant for your iPod, which I presume from the phrase:
poof, there goes my 160GB of music
that you have one of. Or am I entirely mistaken?
I hate iTunes largely for that reason (and it did happen); switched to Rockbox, but am not totally thrilled with that either.
-
What, someone dissing Word 6.0? Don't you like installation disks (I seem to recall about 20 or so).
-
nzMM,
In other news Ubuntu 10.10 just went beta, the efforts of 1000s of people around the world! So amazing!
Proud to be one of em. Rhythmbox or Banshee for the win.
-
Word 6.0 sucked - I stopped using it at 5.something

Bite me, Russell. ;)

(Winamp has no iPhone support, though, which is why the music collection on my iPhone is really minimal. I just can't be arsed starting iTunes to bother with it.)

Crazy like a fox.
Loading to iPod with Winamp instead of iTunes?? That's just blown my mind; will investigate further.

I think one of the good things Jobs did when he returned as "interim" CEO was to crack down on that culture, which really had got out of hand and had little to do with the good of the company. I gather there's a little more direction these days -- although it's amusing how little the different divisions know about each others' marching orders.
Well - I was also working in and around them before Steve left (they got free Mac 2 hardware debugging and actual fixes from me) - I've heard people being dressed down by Steve, from a distance and seen people trying to look invisible in their cubes. I honestly think he started that whole culture of groups competing against each other - maybe it all got more out of hand after he left with out him at the top

i) Am I the only one who goes weak when they hear Cerys talk ?
ii) Tom got a whole lot more authetic for me - hmmm perhaps it's just a Welsh thing...
Thanks anyway Don.
I've gotta say - long before I got my ihate on, the first thing I would uninstall on a PC was quicktime; it came second only to AOL software, anyone remember that ?

Indeed, and then you go and install a printer...
Why is it that printer manufacturers believe that they alone know how you should arrange you photo collection (we all know that's the job of camera manufacturers. Not) and to add insult to inconvenience believe that you really want to print all those pictures. AND... then keep popping up reminders that you could do more and there's an update so you can do even more. Fuckit, I bought the damned printer so I could do less.
(I just looked at my printer and it has a flashing light and a message saying "Turn power off and then on again" It can't do that itself?.
GRRRRRRR! -

Yeah, that's depicted quite nicely in Pirates of Silicon Valley -- my impression is that it all got more self-interested without the dictatorial oversight. People were awarding themselves huge sabbaticals, undermining each others' work, etc.
When Jobs came back he killed most of the product line and development projects. I still recall this amazing post on Apple Recon from 1998 declaring: "Apple is Jonestown after all, Heaven's Gate has been rebuilt ... Jobs is insane."
Turned out they were all wrong ...
-
Maybe Joanne McNeill will also turn out to be wrong, but in the meantime she explains why she doesn't think that Ping will amount to much.

Oh, that's priceless. Here's another gem:
Pixar, as we all know, is an unwelcome player in Hollywood and is NOT a big entity either. Jobs is out of his league. All it will take is Unca Walt to decide to rerelease "Snow White" at the same time as the next Pixar event to wipe out Jobs. Anybody seen that one before?
-
Woah, Ping is so uninviting. I have just been clicking all the links and what nots in it and it doesn't seem to really do ANYTHING. Apple would have been better off opening itunes up to a better relationship with lastfm.
