  • Alfie,

Trump appears to be in meltdown mode.

Another woman has come forward and accused him of abuse. Natasha Stoynoff, a former writer for People magazine went to Trump’s home in 2005 to interview he and Melania on their first wedding anniversary. She claims that Trump took her to another part of the house where he pushed her against a wall and forced his tongue down her throat. Trump responded via Twitter, suggesting that the incident never happened because it wasn’t mentioned in the People story.

Overnight he claimed that the latest revelations of his sexual abuse of women amounted to a “criminal conspiracy” between Hillary Clinton and the New York Times. We’re heading into seriously weird territory here.

“I never knew it would be this vile, this vicious,” he told the crowd in Florida. “Nevertheless I take all of these slings and arrows gladly for you. I take them for the movement so we can have our country back.”

Trump’s lawyers threatened the paper with defamation and demanded a withdrawal. The NY Times responded with what amounts to "Bring it on."

At this point you’d expect that only willfully blind Republicans could continue to support Trump. Even Newt Gingrich is losing faith.

Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker and presidential candidate in 2012 who wanted to be Mr. Trump’s running mate, suggested on Thursday that there were two Donald Trumps.

“There’s a big Trump and a little Trump,” he said in an appearance on the Fox Business Network. “The little Trump is frankly pathetic.”

Today Trump cancelled a scheduled Fox News appearance with his good mate and cheerleader Sean Hannity.

Charles M. Blow writes in the NY Times that Trump is Unshackled and Unhinged.

Trump is losing it, and fast. Buckle up folks. This is getting beyond satire.

  • Alfie,

The HuffPost details another incident at a restaurant involving Trump, his friend and modeling agent John Casablancas, and a group of aspiring models.

According to Boyne, the group was seated at a semi-circular table, with the women in the middle and Trump and Casablancas flanking either end. The women couldn’t get out of their seats without one of the men getting up ― which they refused to do. Instead, Boyne said, Trump insisted that the women walk across the table, allowing him to peer up their skirts while they did so. Trump “stuck his head right underneath their skirts,” Boyne said, and commented on whether they were wearing underwear and what their genitalia looked like.

And in what has become Trump's overriding style, he claims he wouldn't have sexually assaulted former People journalist Natasha Stoynoff... because she's just not good-looking enough.

"Take a look, you take a look, look at her, look at her words -- you tell me what you think. I don't think so," Trump said at his rally.

    What a vile human being.

    aghast in the machine…
The whole Trump phenomenon does seem to strengthen the case for ‘reality’ being a simulation…

(Elon) Musk is just one of the people in Silicon Valley to take a keen interest in the “simulation hypothesis”, which argues that what we experience as reality is actually a giant computer simulation created by a more sophisticated intelligence. If it sounds a lot like The Matrix, that’s because it is.
According to this week’s New Yorker profile of Y Combinator venture capitalist Sam Altman, there are two tech billionaires secretly engaging scientists to work on breaking us out of the simulation.

    – a worm or virus is loose in the machine, Trump may just be the catalyst for a system crash.

Abbott was responding to a motion proposed in the NSW parliament by Green MP Jeremy Buckingham, which passed unanimously. Here's the Hansard text.

    That this House:

    (a) condemns the misogynistic, hateful comments made by the Republican candidate for President of the United States of America, Mr Donald Trump, about women and minorities, including the remarks revealed over the weekend that clearly describe sexual assault;

    (b) reflects on the divisive, destructive impact that hate speech from political candidates and members of elected office has on our community; and

    (c) agrees with those who have described Mr Trump as "a revolting slug" unfit for public office.

    Go the aussies!

Trump doesn't seem that far behind on average (is this site real?).

Could still win - there'll be a lot of voters who won't admit to a pollster they support him.

Some of the polls are still lagging behind Trump's meltdown following the "hot mic" incident. This HuffPost report gives Hillary Clinton an 90.7 percent chance of winning.

The graphic above shows weekend polling in the battleground state of Wisconsin. Note Trump's evangelical vote has plummetted by 24 points. It's hard to see how he can climb back from the abyss he's created for himself.

It’s an outside shot now, though. His only real shot is something extremely damaging coming out about Clinton. But which one is going to be more widely believed: Wikileaks or a stream of women coming forward with allegations of misconduct about him, to bolster his own words to that effect?

The interesting race is pretty much the Senate, now. But Republicans turning on each other isn’t helping that either.

  • Tom Semmens,

This morning I took the trouble to watch all 46 minutes of Trump's latest frightening, rambling rant at West Palm Beach.

Trump, rather than tacking to the centre, seems to have tacked harder to the fringe as the campaign has gone on. To me, it speaks of a man of no great intellect who is drunk (and I suspect high on cocaine a lot of the time, seriously) on the hype of his own PR.

    Crazy times.

BTW, the US could do worse than elect Michelle Obama in 2020. She was great in her most recent speech.

The fact that Clinton has not trounced Trump suggests that the dynastic period we're in is not really that good for American politics.

However, maybe Clinton will be a good president even if she's not really that great a campaigner. I expect we will see.

Stuff today turns out Donald __wants__testing.

He wants to know 'what's going on with her' - maybe having this hulking guy creeping round behind her and making faces and doing everything short of bunny ears is part of it.

He needs to do something about the lip licking too. It's horrible on tv. Other politicians take note.

I'm not entirely sure you could put anything on it that he hasn't already saidor done, unless you want to add a 'literally starts masturbating on stage' square. I mean, he's already said the election is rigged, and more-or-less called for armed insurrection. Where do you go from there? Eat a baby?

With the shackles off, Trump's paranoia is being given free reign. While he's accusing the FBI, Justice and State Departments of 'colluding' with Clinton, Melania Trump says her husband's pussy grabbing comments don't fairly reflect the man he is. In fact, it was all Billy Bush's fault.

... he was lead on. Like egg on from the host to say, uh, dirty and bad stuff.

Bad stuff, eh? Naughty Billy. Go to your room.

  • Rob S,

I seem to recall an analysis of America by some Russian think tank or other that suggested that the US had a good chance of having a civil war.
Is Trump's delegitimising of the electoral process what they had in mind?
Ironic really with the well known propensity of the republicans to engage in wholesale gerrymandering and deregistration of voters.
If the great orange buffoon genuinely believes the system is rigged and he loses the election, then what next?
Great mobs of armed people wandering around while he plans his insurrection from a garish Trumpbunker?
Where this man is going leads to some very dark and dangerous places.
Americas' Grifter in Chief has a large following primed by years of relentless rightwing propaganda via Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, various Evangelical hypocrites and a chorus of nutjob hucksters.
Is there an emollient voice of reason among his circus trying to lower the temperature of his rhetoric or has the Trump train already jumped the rails.
Right now it looks like our American cousins are heading towards a crisis in the political system.
I hope not and after Winston Churchill's dictum they do the right thing after trying everything else and also update their system of governance to something more fit for the 21ST century.
Hillary Clinton and all US politicians are going to need to work hard to right the ship of state after this madness.
    Good luck with that!
    Interesting times.

The Herald has foolishly posted a story that seems to be sourced from fake news site ABCNEWS.com.co The clue being the .co after .com
    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/world/news/article.cfm?c_id=2&objectid=11731356
A very brief bit of Google work found this out so it’s not that the writer, or the Herald, couldn’t fact check this story.

  • Russell Brown, in reply to Dinah Dunavan,

Another story by the Frank Chung of news.com.au. Only faker than the last one.

UPDATE: Okay, although this looks like the fake story from the fake ABC site, it's different and based on some sort of facts. Scott Foval, the Dem contractor named, has in fact resigned.

Why haven't most media reported it? because it's based on yet another ambush video from James O'Keefe, who has a long history of dishonest editing and misrepresentation.

So it's impossible to tell how how much of what is depicted is actually true – in this case, how much of it is simply getting supporters to front up at Trump rallies, whether it's really endorsed by the campaign, etc – as journalists have learned to their cost in the past. Ironically, O'Keefe is such a known liar it undermines what's probably a decent scoop.

It's worth noting that even if it's all true (which is unlikely), the basis of it is getting people to go to Trump rallies and ask questions or simply look different, on the assumption that Trump supporters will act crazy and violent in response.

A strong correlation between the sort of people who fall for junk e-mail scams, and hard-right voters. Who'da guessed?

  • linger, in reply to Rich Lock,

A more accurate characterisation of that article is that right-wing campaigns are overwhelmingly likely to use the tactics of junk email scams: they're morally bankrupt, and they're aware of that, and they're counting on voters to be stupid.
