Aw ... I think he changed rock music more than most people realise. I feel privileged to have heard him peel off those dirty, thunderous guitar licks at the BDO.

Fabulous guitarist, influenced so many of the bands I love from the mid-70s onwards. Fun House is one album every rock loving mofo should own and the opening bars of Down on the Street tell you all you need to know about Ron Asheton.
Good news on the iTunes front, I just wish I found the interface easier to navigate for downloads.

Fer sure. There remain things that really suck about the iTunes Store, but at least that's one thing fixed.

Sad news about Ron Asheton...absolutely one of the most unappreciated/under rated guitarists of all time.
That being said, he sure packed a few shenanigans into his 60 years...

Beginning today, all four major music labels—Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, Warner Music Group and EMI, along with thousands of independent labels, are now offering their music in iTunes Plus, Apple’s DRM-free format with higher-quality 256 kbps AAC encoding for audio quality virtually indistinguishable from the original recordings. iTunes customers can also choose to download their favorite songs from the world’s largest music catalog directly onto their iPhone™ 3G over their 3G network just as they do with Wi-Fi today, for the same price as downloading to their computer. And beginning in April, based on what the music labels charge Apple, songs on iTunes will be available at one of three price points: 69 cents, 99 cents and $1.29, with most albums still priced at $9.99.

Cruel. ;) Reminds me of when the Monkees got down to just Davy and Micky. Some wag suggested that when the next one left, the remainder would carry on as "the monkee."

Having just bought (not inherited) my first actual Apple product, I'm finding adjusting the the "culture" a challenge. I have an iPod Touch. I don't need an iPhone - I already have a good, cheap, phone. But the Touch! I LOVE the very cool software, the look, the feel, the sheer joy of using the thing......but do not enjoy having to import by ripped-separately 256k MP3 files through iTunes...and then not being able to copy them back off again. I use several PCs (mainly Windows laptop and desktop and a Linux system) at home.....not just one....so having the iPod "tethered" to one PC is limiting and sometimes inconvenient. Of course it doesn't work with Linux at all.
Being used to doing whatever I want, whenever, wherever with Linux, adjusting to the more restricted Apple 'system' hasn't been pleasant.
I want the Apple goodness......but ultimately, the freedom means more. I won't be a loyal Apple customer.

Getting excited about multiple price points at the iTunes Store is like being thrilled there are three price points at the gas station. Or losing your cookies that Coke comes in multiple-sized cups at 7-11.
As for being DRM-free... Whoopee! As I've stated countless times, the only people who care about DRM don't pay for music, they just steal it. Otherwise, Amazon would have eclipsed Apple and the Seattle company would own the online music market, not the one based in Cupertino.

Steve - check out Amarok - the ipod touches work with it (you do have to root it first) - I set my kids ones up to work on their Linux boxes

No time to follow up today, but is anyone writing about what this means for the deals Apple struck with the mobile networks? And what impact it might have on their data pricing in our fair land?

Ron's vision of 2 and 3 chord music repeated over and over at ear blasting volume had a huge effect on music. The 70s would have been very different if The Stooges hadn't been recording their proto punk back in 1969

I can connect to my ipod nano using RhythmBox in Ubuntu. Does the mounting and everything automatically.
But of course you can't access the itunes store. Need to boot in to windows for that. -

Back about 78 I was at a Rock'n'Roll Records auction in Queen Street (they were, along with Record Exchange, the collectors heaven of the time) bidding on a copy of The Stooges. It was sought after and very hard to find as it was long deleted, and was getting up there price wise. Eventually there were only two of us, myself and Graham Brazier. He then, quickly, doubled my bid and shot me out of the water. I asked him why he'd made that jump and he replied 'Ron Asheton'.

Not really, the hell raising years were fairly few for Ron and much of that was down to the Ig.
Brian Wilson surprises me more.

The problem is not that it exists, it's how it's implemented.If you brought a CD, but were only allowed to listen to it on our car CD player and were forced to purchase another copy so you could listen to it on your living room stereo or if you upgrade you car CD player, then you would be bitching too.

I just checked and only 13 of my 207 purchases are currently upgradable (and not the Carl Craig Sessions on K7 which I've used up my CD burn total on).
