Dratted preview lag. That's brilliant, Emma.

Please do fix the RSS feed, though. I would read more posts if they were there, rather than blowing it off when the couple of lines' teaser isn't immediately enticing. Often they're pretty useless; especially given how meandering the posts can be.

We can add that field.
I hate harping on about Metafilter, but another rather nice feature it has goes like this. Members have profile pages, and when you create your profile, there is a large list of "social" sites (Librarything, LastFM, Linkedin, whatever) and you can add all the ones that you belong to if you want. So rather than having "a field", you have a little set of records for each user. That's nice, because it's extensible, and when the new hotness that everyone wants to join comes along, you just make it another option, and Bob's your uncle. Eg, this is mine. When one feels like a spot of harmless stalking, it's just the ticket.
In the past, when I have brought up Metafilter, other people have poo-poohed it, for reasons which I understand even if I don't agree. Anyway I think it's good to look at other community sites if only because it helps you to more clearly articulate how you're different, and why you've chosen to be that way.

OMG. You are joe's spleen! I love it when people I read turn out to be people I know. Erm, I mean 'know'.

Consider the 'What was I thinking?!' comment a rite of passage. We've all done it. :)
I just worry when I get that feeling again and again and again......
Is there any point in beefing up the search tool ?
For me a good PAS thread is like a big party - the main room with the dancers, conversations in the kitchen, the odd scuffle in the corner and of course a drunk or two stumbling around, what's there to dislike ?

Actually, Danielle, that's Stephen's tongue, prominently displayed on his Metafilter page.
I really think Stephen ought to have warned us before he posted that link.

PA (and PAS) has been so popular for me that my workplace has now blocked the whole domain.
I have to wait until I get home to read it now. My commenting (while never hugely frequent or insightful) has dropped right off. I never seem to have anything new to say that hasn't already been said by someone on the long journey to page 8 of the comments...

*1st Column - that's exactly what a good thread is like for me - thank you for the articulation.

Thirded, 81st - brilliant summary.

Hurrah for shambols say I
-
Ooo Jackie - I'm with the Shambols too!
(O, also the shrdlus...has anyone got a recording of the encounter between the last desert shrdlu & and the laaaast desert kumquat?) -
CTRL+, CTRL- and CTRL-0 work in IE and Firefox on Windows for myself.
It works, wonderful thanks, nice big font. Good, I'll be able to keep reading PA till I'm 100.
But I'm not so sure about the party analogy - I'm one of those people who has to find a nice quiet place to have a good argument.

Lance's complaint is blocked in China.

Hilary, that's when we go out of the kitchen into the garden & have a good old natter under the moon (or the evening sun...)
mark taslov- 'nother thread, 'nother comment from you: response: nah, not doing jury duty, just being south...it was the kind of trial (of Clayton W.) that actually verified all the chat & rumours going round Otago.

Don't make me get out the Italian stereotype bingo card, 'kay?
You'll be telling us you don't like techno next..

Yeah, sorry, I did that.
On a different topic: earlier today on this very thread I unaccountably attributed the poem M'illumino d'immenso to Giosuè Carducci, whereas of course it's by Giuseppe Ungaretti. The shame! But it's a testimony to the class of the PAS readership that somebody pointed this out to me discreetly via email rather than exposing me to the public humiliation that I most assuredly deserved.

I just wanted to back up Stephen on this point. The Mefi profile page and its social bookmarking capability is one of the most quietly elegant pieces of community weblog design I can think of.

Stupid SMTP should have filters for that kind of thing.
I hate to point out an advantage of MS proprietary stuff over Internet standards, but Exchange has done "recall" for several years now. It even works, sometimes.

You're lucky pal, I was sooo going to tell the whole group... then where'd you be aye?

I sense an element of duress contributed to Mr Tiso's admission.
-
Stephen, I'd just like to say you look remarkably like a young Chris Knox in that pic. That is all.
-
just being south...
I hope you had a nice time, probably not such a bad time to not have internet access.
re: the site, could I suggest ever so slightly larger avatars or would that take up too much space?

What I don't get is why anyone would think it necessary or worthwhile to make a complaint about the use of .net in a domain. Or was that a point about marketing/ SEO that I just don't get?
Also, I add my vote to keeping your posts in the current style. I for one probably wouldn't check in so often if the blogs on this site changed to shorter, one thought pieces. I can get that kind of NZ commentary from a bunch of other sites, so I value being able to get some usually more in depth articles.

I subscribe to the email notifications then go to my RSS reader (Vienna on the Mac, its free) and look it up there where PAS is bookmarked. I like that it lists all posts as I will occasionally look up one of the others or one of the Guest posts.
I got into the RSS reader after noticing that if you leave a page open in Safari for longer than about a day it slows everything down a lot, which made following blog posts difficult. Vienna doesn't have that problem so I can follow discussions for days if necessary.
I am not on any social networking sites and as others have said, I don't do smalltalk so see no point to Twitter. People still email me, so why change?
I will also buck the trend and vote for threading please. Maybe its because for a long time after blogging went live I stuck resolutely to usenet, which is fully threaded and has been for ages so I find the lack of threading irritating. New Scientist use threading on their boards and I think it works well there.
-
One thing though, I keep being logged out of PAS after a few minutes of not posting. Doesn't happen in other sites. Is that a feature or a bug?
