  • Andre Alessi,

I'm not often given to one liners, but honestly I felt it was appropriate in this case. I mean, I'd really like to know the reasoning there?

I wouldn't. Too much like creepy crawly things under rocks.

  • Sacha,

what woman would allow herself to be groped and not report it

Most of us know by now that reporting an incident does not automatically result in charges, let alone conviction.

    Style leaves fingerprints...

    Deranged tryhardness, for instance.
Oh, look it's a full moon again.

  • Danielle,

Look, I'm sitting happily on the couch watching the cricket. I just had a delightfully moist piece of orange and almond cake. Feeling pretty relaxed. Do I have to rustle up the effort to rebut some deeply moronic assertions in this thread, or can I not bother and we can all pretend I did?

The cricket is far more worthy of your attention, IMhO. Riveting. Bit stressed about Oram though. Batting with a runner?

Message being, Ladies don't even bother reporting abuse anymore. Chances are you're wasting valuable police and court resources with your deranged mentrual tryhardness.

*yawn*...give the trolling a rest Sacha.

I'm feeling pretty relaxed about your strategic headquarters management style too, although I'm ambitious that the cake will run out and my imagination won't need so much taxation.

Sorry, the cricket's on, but did someone just call Sacha a troll, having used the term 'deranged menstrual* tryhardness'? Can I have 10% of the gate?

    *I assume the 's' was a typo.

  • Peter Ashby,

How's this for an idea then, feel free to stop me if you think it too hypothetical. But young Bailey is sitting at home with his ailing mother on license and forbidden from speaking to the media. Then two female reporters door knock him and suddenly they are inside his house. If he throws them out or throws a wobbly then he's back inside. So how does his adolescent mind come up with something to make them go away? None of this need be anywhere near as logically conscious as that for it to work out as it did and he may well have decided to have some fun along the way. Credit the guy at least with knowing the terms of his license. It seems we are treating him too much like an OTHER and not Homo sapiens. Try thinking yourself into his head and situation.

How do you get two pushy reporters to leave your house with those restrictions on you? Honestly, how? We all know reporters don't leave just because you ask. So how?

There's been other name shifters/shape-shifters here...most of us who use web-names here, have also identified ourselves in other ways.

I havent read the article-I dont want to. The tag is always "NZ's youngest killer" which - as numerous other posters have pointed out, he *wasnt*. I know of far younger killers(children who killed with deliberation, given the exculpation that they were legally children when they killed) - who didnt, because of Coroner's court rulings- ever have their names publicised.

Peter Ashby's scenario is plausible, chris.

I wonder about their boss's drivers tho'-

  • Peter Ashby,

    @Alien Lizard

Ah but how did he see them? The method generally works well with the fairer sex too. The 'groping' may either have been an escalation in the getting them to leave or their failure to scarper may have given him ideas. Those are not mutually exclusive either when you are keeping your options open. But with his ailing mother in the next room? maybe not so much so I plump for escalation.

I bet that is how he'll sell it to his probation officer, 'they just wouldn't leave'. After all he didn't ring the Herald and invite them, did he?

  • Rich Lock,

Young Bailey is sitting at home forbidden from speaking to the media. Then two female reporters door knock him and suddenly they are inside his house.

First contact was made by telephone - the Herald phoned him up. Then they were either freely extended an invite, or pushed for one (my recollection of the article doesn't make it entirely clear which).

So they didn't 'door knock' him, and it woldn't have been a total surprise to him when they showed up.

  • Rich Lock,

I also don't think it would be a bad idea to compare the treatment of the two murderers of James Bulger in the UK with the Bailey situation, at least as far as media attention goes.

The gutter end of the UK press makes the HoS look like a church newsletter, but (so far) an injunction against publishing their location and other details of their new lives has been more or less sucessfully enforced, with the government spending quite a bit of time, effort and money to that end.

Now, admittedly, you need an injunction in place in order to even try to enforce it, and there doesn't appear to be one in the Bailey case.

But I'd say that the two children in that case have a least a slim chance of being able to not have entirely wasted lives. On present evidence, Bailey not so much.

  • Rich Lock,

Oh, and one of my newsfeeds has just presented me with this: "The return of Jon Venables to jail 17 years after he murdered little Jamie Bulger on Merseyside poses any liberal society with a devastating conundrum. In short, the abiding question is: can you cure a 10-year-old who has committed murder?"

  • Craig Ranapia,

Whilst we are on about Act, is anyone else willing to subscribe to a fund to sterilise David Garrett?

No, because even as pure snark eugenics is too creepy for words, and Garrett's vision of castration for cash to balance the books is unworthy of discussion in any society with pretensions to civilization. Still, I wonder how many folks cheering Garrett on would have been so keen to see John Banks -- the son of a recidivist jail bird and a back alley abortionist -- sterilised so as not to spread his tainted DNA any further?

More like the going rate for danger pay and post-traumatic stress counselling. Really, how much money would it take before you'd go near Garrett's block and tackle?
