  • Matthew Poole,

and exactly what of whiteys rules did he break

Being an adult, and doing what he was being paid to do - go to the meeting. He wasn't being paid to skive off to Paris, he was being paid to represent NZ as part of a multi-party delegation. If he wanted to go to Paris while he was in Europe, I don't think any of the people who're currently screaming blue murder would've batted an eyelid if he'd shuffled his flights back by a day or two and gone to Paris once the official trip was over. We were going to be paying for him to fly home one way or the other, so big whoop if he changes the dates.

Anyone who thinks that Harawira is getting hard done-by and Hide is getting tickled with a feather needs to pay a little more attention. Rodney's the one who's getting thoroughly roasted by the Herald, with Hone as almost a side-show. Hell, if it hadn't been for that intemperate email it's entirely possible that the trip to Paris would've been ignored until the Speaker's decision on partial airfares repayment. But he had to go and play the race card, and now he's digging the hole at a rate nearly equal to the dis-Honourable Member for Epsom.
Looking at Granny and Stuff, the number of articles on the gaffes of Hone and Rodney are roughly equal. So there's no obvious bias in coverage based on ethnicity. They both fucked up, live and in colour, and now both are, as Tom says, discovering just why NZ has such a reputation for being free of corruption.

  • dubmugga,

oh please... its not like any of us have never pulled a sickie and skived off work for the day. just cos he's a public servant now doesnt mean we should expect more from him, if anything we should expect less.

i mean, he prolly would have done it no matter what his job was or who was paying him, at least he's consistent unlike rodders.

scream blue murder all you like but it's more of a media beat up and a distraction from how piss poor the nats are really doing in both running the country and their coalition.

and as for the colourful e-mail, despite the language it's still the truth so it was a bit rich seeing that pompous hairdo and well known good for nothing peter dunne on telly saying whites had 'allegedly' ripped of maori.

i'd much rather see the arse end of that leech on the taxpayer than hone.

  • Matthew Poole,

Glad to know you're happy to accept mediocre service from your politicians. When I'm paying to fly someone over half way around the world on a business trip, I expect their full attention to the matter at hand.
I think you'd find that most employers would deem Harawira's actions to be serious misconduct, and we all know how fond MPs are of comparing themselves to private-sector managers.

As for the email, I don't see how it matters a damn if it's true or not. Or is he blaming the thieving Pakeha for his lacking work ethic?

  • dubmugga,

hah...you're just the kind of person hone wouldn't give a shit on what your opinion was or accept that he is answerable to you in any way

he is answerable first and foremost to his electorate and if they accept him as mediocre then sweet by me

besides, i'd be setting myself up for disappointment if i demand excellence from the current bunch of clowns we got running parliament

  • Craig Ranapia,

oh so it wasnt even at taxpayers expense, then whats the problem ?

oh please... its not like any of us have never pulled a sickie and skived off work for the day.

Oh, for fuck's sake Dubmugga -- you're either thick as week old custard, or I'm going to feed a troll and live to regret it.

He was in Brussels at taxpayer's expense to do a job -- which he apparently couldn't be arsed with. I'd suggest with no respect whatsoever if any MFAT staffer or consular official in Europe did the same (and lied about being sick, to boot) they'd be sacked, and receive no sympathy whatsoever.

i'm gonna get all up in nick smiths face i think

Feel free -- you wouldn't be alone around these parts. And if he decides to respond here with an obscenity-laced, batshit crazy racist tirade I'll call him out too.

  • Ian Dalziel,

I'm with Matthew & Craig on this...
any responsible adult with a basic grasp on geography, and wanting to visit a nearby capital city would have arranged an extension to their trip. Rather than evince the sudden realisation that "gosh I could just skip work and go get an "eiffel" of Paris"...
Heartening as it is that he is interested in the heritage of the White MF oppressors...
It would be interesting to know exactly when he bought the tickets, as to how premeditated his "spur of the moment - mug not to make it" trip was... (my emphasis)

snouts in trough - living high in the Hone sty - along with the appalling Rortney "Shekel & Hide" all singing and dancing "The working class can kiss my arse - I've got the boss's job at last" show

    sigh....

  • Joe Wylie,

    What Just thinking said.

Back when Dalvanius Prime travelled to London to make initial arrangements for Patea Maori's appearance in the Royal Variety Show he visited Harrods, where he bought a wide selection of the lowest-priced items he could find. On his return, all the local Patea kids got to take their lunch to school in Harrods bags. Wonder what Hone H brought back for his wider whanau?

There was more intermarriage than killing.

    Conquest by the "pork sword",
    a more humane assimilation
    and blurring of bloodlines...

...could be a whole new fantasy genre:
    Pork Sword & Sourcery

...and how much is the country going to suffer or benefit for him not being at that meeting, probably not one bit ? it was his decision and he lives and politically dies by it.

i just dont think it's as big a deal as everyone makes it out to be, that doesn t make me thick or a troll so you can quit it with that shit as well. k'thx:)

  • Joe Wylie,

i just dont think it's as big a deal as everyone makes it out to be . . .

I more or less agree, though the reservations Harawira has expressed about the dead rats that he feels his party has had to swallow would seem a lot less self-serving if he'd gone public with them before the current outbreak of silliness.

Dubmugga: It certainly doesn't, but gratuitously trolling for a fight with EVERYONE on a thread then playing the victim when you get it seems pretty textbook Trolling for Dummies to me.

  • Lucy Stewart,

By the way, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge Rodney Hide's straightforward and contrite apology for his hypocritical use of perks. It's sadly rare for politicians to say "I was wrong, and I'm sorry." Good on him for that.

(Of course, it was also a good political move, etcetera, but we'd be bagging on him for not apologising if he'd chosen to brazen it out like Douglas, so I still think he deserves credit for doing the right thing.)

  • dubmugga,

    enough projecting yet craig ?

look at it this way. hone led that delegation and some traits of a good leader are the ability to prioritise and delegate. he obviously didnt think the meeting worthy of his time and prioritised his lady instead. choosing family over work is after all admirable in itself . he then had enough faith in rest of the team that he felt he could delegate the responsibility of representing NZ's interest by having them attend the meeting without him having to be there to hold their hands:)

hardly a sacking offense but yeah, he shouldn't have lied to tariana and needs to be a bit more selective in who he responds to with their obvious troll baiting emails. buddy just comes off sounding like a jealous snitch.

by the way has anyone seen "in the loop" ? now theres some foul mouthed and silly politicking with spin gone mad

  • Islander,

Thanks Just Thinking & Joe - I love my Southern ancestry . While I'm not in the least blind to TRONT faults (or what the olds did), I think it uninformed - & stupid- to rave about matters that were commonplace
in days gone by as though thpse were especial Kai Tahu failings. And especially irritating to have a nutcase like Brailsford held up as an exemplar of research&discovery in South Island matters.

Noel Hilliam anybody? I left that name off my list of Pakeha idiots who abuse history & archaeology, but clicking on the blog Reading The Maps (I truly am going to learn how to embed sites this coming week)
will bring you More Than You Ever Wanted To Know.

Hilliam is a devotee of Brailsford and the whole 'Waitaha' newagey crapheap.

i think it quite enlightening to those who know nothing of the true history of ngai tahu and to uphold the validity of brailsfords earlier works.

perhaps by your reasoning then we should stop raving about matters in days gone by completely and accept things as they are now without ever thinking how they got to be this way especally if it suits ones agenda to do so.

or maybe just do it behind closed doors and dictate the results to the peasantry ?

We're marooning Laws and Hone Harawira together? Excellent. Pretty sure there's a reality TV show in there somewhere, too.
