evening all. I can report that overseas voting was bril. Simply download print, get witness (a person), sign & fax. Piece of cake.
Tactical voting all the way.
Now listening to National Radio but wine at 9am is a little early. The champers wil be flowing later.Agree 100% about how easy it was. If only following the election over here was as easy; I can't get TV3's streaming at all, and Radio NZ's keeps cutting in and out. The US election was much easier to follow ;)
And no champagne here.

Steve - I wanted you to work that one out for yourself about Roger. Almost the most beautiful news of the evening. It has suited Clark to picture him as some kind of ogre but the reality is that he cares deeply about raising all boats, not simply redistributing. You will see him being re established in public mind over the next few years.

Meh. We just went straight to electionresults.org.nz, and supplied our own commentary, which has gotten wittier as the night has gone on. Or maybe that's just the wine speaking...

Will this lead to people taking a less trivial, more serious-minded approach to politics, I wonder? You know, less tolerance for the Jane Clifton 'ha ha isn't this a jolly game?' bullshit. I mean, a lot of people are going to be hurt by this government-in-waiting. I mean, seriously fucked over. ACT are a bunch of thugs, as dangerous as any whacked-out-on-ideology cult, and any governing coalition that features them is going to do some serious human damage.
This is bad.

John key waiting at home for the concession call from Helen to concede. Anybody betting she does not have the grace to concede?

The final kick in the nuts. Roger fucking Douglas.
Word. (Except I don't have any nuts.) I was driving my mother home from my grandfather's 90th birthday dinner (since we're talking about it: roast pork, new potatoes, apple pie and custard for dessert) and heard a gleeful Rodney Hide on NatRad talking about the 'important role' Douglas was going to play in the new government. I shall now vomit.
(Plus I now live in a *National* area? Who do I blame for the swing - the yuppie lifestyle blockers in Oratia?)
I'm going to have a sad, sad margarita now.
-
Bridges has a 10,000 majority in Tauranga and Mark came third in Rimutaka. That means there must have been huge Labour tactical voting to get Winston First up to 4.3%
-
Deborah, that's what I've been doing. But sitting alone in a cold flat with a laptop and no alcohol makes it slightly boring.
(Next time I need to find a chatroom or something).
-
Also, if you voted Green in Ohariu, I hate you. Just for this evening, anyway.
ae. none to bright those green voters...
i say that, and i'm a watermelon.

Apple syrup, feijoa vodka, lime and soda. It's what left apart from the good stuff. And I'm not wasting the good stuff this evening.
Prediction: TV3 commentators talking about a coalition with the Maori Party are in bleeding-heart liberal fantasy-land. Act have nowhere to go, Dunne is also a remora, and the Maori Party will want big concessions.
-
Just listening to a very restrained Gerry Brownlee. He had nice words to say about Peters concession. I very much doubt Key is going to allow any triumphalism along the lines of Cullens "we won you lost eat that"
-
i'm calling nats screwing ACT down to confidence and supply only. minimal/no cabinet posts.
they've got numbers at the minute
-
Steve, you mean about the cricket, right?
.
Enjoy your tax cuts, you can tell your starving grandchildren how wonderful and fulfilling they were while you shiver around a burning pile of worthless, soiled bank notes.
There will be a wailing of desperate souls and a gnashing of teeth as we sink into the horror of the end of days. We will trudge endlessly into the abyss to the sounds of crying children. All is darkness. abandon all hope, all is lost.
Opener Simon Katich struck an unbeaten 92 to move Australia to 189 for two at stumps. -
3 more seats and they can do it alone. Bugger
-
c'mon, Steve
Tell us how you really feel.

God, I hope not. This was always the nightmare scenario for Labour - not quite reaching the threshold, but Peters losing Tauranga, and thus redistributing the NZF votes. The best scenario was a crushing NZF defeat with voters defecting left AND Peters losing. Big failure of nerve in not cutting him loose. Peters is the big reason I didn't vote for them tonight, and it looks like a big contributor to their imminent loss.

Surprise of the night - Bill and Ben get 0.56% = 10,000 votes.
Didn't I hear something about them having a drink for each vote they got?
-

I agree with Jeanette Fitzsimons on that one..
-
And I have a National MP now in Nathan Guy. Swapped one whip for another
-
Bill and Ben get 0.56%
I heard them on C4 saying they get their deposit back over 0.5 and a throwaway offer to lay the 500 on a bar shout..
-
Swapped one whip for another
But missed out on champagne charlie wielding it.. :)
-
I doubt it. I think there's just plenty of people who like the racism he preaches.

Yes, he has lots of friends with boats. I sailed on Alan Gibbs boat with him back in the late 80s. I don't often get sick at sea but the memory of that day still raises the bile.
-
Someone on TV3 (who *is* that person?) just told John Campbell that National wouldn't want to be 'messing around with hui' in making any agreements with the Maori Party. Um, dismissive much?
Half a huge margarita down. It isn't helping.

I hope Key is true to his word about ruling Roger Douglas out of a cabinet post. If not, NZ is about to be an economic experiment for the Australian HR Nicholls society.
Cricket score is 325-7.
