No, I'm not KIDDING, thanks Sacha. I agree with Craig that 'I'm just concerned for his *humiliated* wife' is pretty paternalistic. There's enough to object to in his actions - I've been raging about them for days now - without bringing her into it as if we actually give a shit about her feelings.

TBH it really is up to Bronagh to find Key’s public celebrity-banging list offensive or inoffensive. I just said to someone else that if I were her I’d be humiliated not because of the list, but because I was married to such a huge fucking DORK who thought it was Prime Ministerially endearing to be snarfling it up on the radio, but I suppose that’s another issue altogether.
Yes, it is up to her, but I don’t think it’s out of order for people to point out that she doesn’t have the same pulpit as her husband to express that outrage. He gets to be a twatcock in public, and the most she can hope for is a brief whinge in a woman’s mag – that probably already lionised her husband anyway. That’s not exactly even, which is certainly the problem I have with being told that Bronagh can get angsty in her own right. Of course she can, but we probably won’t get to hear about it, or hear from Key that, actually, he’s been a real fuck-knuckle, and, no, it’s not really good manners to talk about things like that on radio when you’re the PM.

But that's not what the poster was saying, is it? To me the concern expressed is about the public implications of John Key's behaviour for all of us making voting decisions, not about Bronagh's feelings. Here's what was actually posted again:

There are two issues here. The first is that a) John Key's actions on the radio ranged from 'kinda inappropriate for a PM' (the list of fuckables) to 'downright disturbing' (tacit approval of Tony Veitch by appearing at all). I think all of these things are totally acceptable to be judgeypants about. The second is 'oh, I feel so sorry for his wife', and frankly, I just don't think that's the point of this whole offensive episode. She married that dork, and for all we know they each have a jazzy little celebrity bonk list on the fridge and she isn't humiliated at all. I'm happy to ignore issue two, because I am not in a position to know and it's kind of patronising to assume anything, and I will continue to bitch endlessly about the first issue, is all I'm saying.

Yeah, OK, I suppose. I just think discussion of this sort of thing slips very easily from 'this has bad implications for voters' to 'he is sexually immoral' and I don't think I want to go there.

Feeling sorry for her for marrying the dork would just be pointless. I'm sure she knew perfectly well that he was a spineless "mirror man" before they tied the knot, and even if she didn't it's not like divorce ends your life these days. One assumes that she thinks his good points outweigh his bad points, even if many of us are struggling to find many good points to weigh.

I know Tony Veitch needs to work but I would prefer it not in front of the camera, That your Prime Minister would blather on in such a matey style about such inappropriate topics in a public forum, hosted by someone whose media image is defined by brutality and an absence of basic respect towards women disturbs me far more than anything else here. Part of what disturbs me is the fact that John Key is a the leader of a country and his inability to even simulate a sober, intellectual personality is just embarrassing. Must he be such a pinhead?
What I mean by "pinhead" also refers to his inability to remember his position on the Springbok tour and his blithe declaration that money for early childhood education was not a priority for his government.

ETA: Whatevs. I’ve redacted my unhelpfully strong opinion of Laws, Willie Jackson and John Tamihere. But I take at face value people who’ve said they listen to the podcasts here because they won’t listen to Radio Live on principle. I don’t like my work being tainted by association with people whose bigotry I hold in utter contempt, but would be a hypocrite to criticise people who place blanket anathemas on media outlets they consider offensive.

Fair question - I differentiate between a social association - matey joking about who's fuckable or how desirable it would be to be compulsively and indiscriminately promiscuous like Tiger Woods - and professional association, for instance answering a relevant question posed by an journalist during an interview. Key was not providing information, he was trying to "bond" with hosts on a tacky sad tv show to pander to a deomographic group - boofheads.
The nature of the show Key appeared on is pretty dated and repellant to begin with. Key was bonding and sniggering with his hosts, and that looks foolish if you're leading a country, no matter who your host is. But if it's someone with a violent criminal record - it makes their sniggering bonding guest look even more offensive, irresponsible, and potentially intimidating by association.
