At the R.E.M. concert last year (New Plymouth version) we got The Checks and Brighteyes! (R.E.M. were great too)
I felt that the Checks had the edge over Brighteyes (Peter Buck even played the riff from What You Heard). My friend disagreed, but what does he know.

Today's Herald has an article on the World Music Awards in London. Seems we're all wrong about Nickelback as they've just been voted the worlds best - "Nickelback beat Coldplay and the Red Hot Chili Peppers to win World's Best Rock Group".
Go figure!
-
I know someone who went to see the Stones purely for Nickleback. She left after they finished.
We don't talk anymore, obviously.
-
Spare Room offers an inspired solution to Nickelback's creativity slump here.
I have seen the future of schlock and roll and its name is Hurra Torpedo.
Andre, if you have any more horrifying stories like that, you would be most welcome to do a guest post on Island Life in the weekly Discouraging Revelations feature.
-
Can't blame the stones for picking them though - there was never any danger of them being upstaged by the support.
-
For god's sake Russ it's "Champion _in_ the Arena"!
But you're right, it's a stone cold classic.
-
Saw The Checks at one of the BfM Summer Series gigs in Albert Park a couple of years ago, and they blew the place away. I imagine they have only gotten better.
That is the real shit, and coming from someone who first saw the Stones in early 70's... -
Just don't let them (the Checks) get on the cover of the NME.
Seems to be the kiss of death for any band.Besides, to we need that stale old rag to tell us how good a band (NZ bands in particular) is?
The cover of the NME is not the measure of NZ tax-payer dollars.

While we're all talking digital music and Rock'n'Roll, I just discovered Wolfgang's Vault yesterday.
300 free-to-stream (and fully legal) live concerts from Billy Graham's Fillmore archives + King Biscuit Flower Hour tapes.
60, 70,80s stuff from Springsteen to Cream, Van Morrison, Pink Floyd, Elton John, Crowded House, Cure, Duran Duran, Led Zep,
Stevie Ray Vaughan...http://concerts.wolfgangsvault.com/
Enough to get lost in for months...
And I'm also enjoying the Bernie Worrell (P-Funk) and 60+ Warren Zevon live recordings that are available on archive.org

JP, I'd be keen to hear the Bernie Worrell stuff.
Speaking of Bernie, what ever happend to Aja Rock?
lol
-
Oh my god, JP - how brilliant is that website. So many thanks for that. Wow. Sly and the Family Stone live? Frigging genius.
-
The search results are awkward to link to (lots of spaces etc), but here's some;

There's also stuff without WOOWarriors, but I'll let you fight your way through the http://www.archive.org/details/etree links to find it.
Wolfgang's Vault has a couple of Hendrix shows plus some Sly Stone if you like the Funk. I was hoping for some classic soul performers (ABC doesn't really count), but it seems a bit light in that area. Maybe with the future additions? (5 new (old) shows added per week they're saying)
One of the real gems is Elton John on his first US tour in 1970, 3 piece band. Nice cover of the Stones Honky Tonk Woman too...

Ack - that Elton John URL got cut off due to vertical bar. Just cut & paste the whole thing.
And Jackie, you're welcome. I've spent hours on there. Streaming Van Morrison while I work this morning. Laughed that Flock of Seaguls made the US fans wait until the very last song before pulling out I Ran...
-
Wowsa! Yes, many thanks, JP. Those Fillmore and Winterland concerts were monumental.
-
You have A Flock of Seagulls live link too?
'I Ran' was a hit, yes, but they had much better songs!
-
Tomorrowpeople, just head to concerts.wolfgangsvault.com and you can browse artists by name - that link will take you straight to "A" where "A flock of Seagulls" is first on the list...
-
Thanks JP
I am listening to A flock of seagulls now, simply because it was the first one that I came to. What a fantastic find!!!
-
Wow - I'm going to be spending some time there!
Funny to note the site's catch phrase is 'Where Music Lives'.
C4 TV anybody?

Three of the world's worst groups right there.
Chili Peppers are just AWFUL.
Coldplay - yeurgh!Followed closely by U2 post 'POP' album, Goodcharlottespanicatthediscomychemialromance etc.
;)
-
Damn - and I paid $35 US for a bootleg of the Berlin Live at the Savoy gig on ebay last year!
-
Someone has to say this... Nickle Spack
-
Obviously it's possible to register successfully at concertvaults, but apparently not for me. It's been timing out forever. "Disappointed!"
-
Yeah - I think I must have told too many people today ;)
Keep trying though, especially later in the evening as America goes to sleep.
I can get in OK to play tracks, but there is some network congestion interfering with it all.
-
I have the Someday/Remind split on mp3. Every now and then it comes up on shuffle on my iPod and I always listen to it because it brings me such pleasure.
The funny thing is that I can absolutely tolarate "How you remind me", but yet "Someday" makes me feel ill, so even though both songs have the same structure, there's something else going on that means they're not total clones.
-

Chili Peppers are just AWFUL.
Coldplay - yeurgh!Couldn't agree more. I can't work out how these guys decide which bands are in competition for the world's best. Perhaps it's measured by the length of time since they last had an original or inspirational idea.
