I learned not to expect too much from EC when I bought the 12' of High Fidelity - yes indeed folks! the same as the 7' with bigger gaps between the groove(s).

At least we've worked out you don't hold grudges for three decades ;)

There were a lot of those back then as everything got banged out on 12" as well as 7". You can, I think, to be fair, blame WEA for that one rather than the artist.

Those wide grooves gave you the high fidelity though...

  • st ephen,

The last thing you want when old farts have a reunion is New Material...

Sadly that's exactly what they're doing at the moment...

Aargh. "Old farts with creative core intact playing new material" drops to second-to-last thing.

Sounds like a Paul McCartney gig...

Though surely with McCartney the chances of the latest album not being worse than the previous ten must be increasing?...

    Diss town...
...is comin' like a ghost town...
that's the tune the little "Big is good" Auckland TV ad should have used - and that's what it shows, all the wraiths of commerce past flitting through the strangely empty streets, and ending with the old guy letting himself back into the cemetery as the sun comes up... I rest my case ; - )

Still might make an interesting premise for a TV series - anyone? anyone?

  • Luke Williamson,

Oh Ian, word-play galore for a Friday arvo. Well done. And for those who are too polite to say it - Specials were tedious when they started and became more boring as they went on. But, hey, I'm listening to ancient Steely Dan as I write this so who am I to criticise.

He's kinda had a bit of a rennaisance in recent yeas. It's the early to late 80s which were the pits.

The last three or four albums have sold well, had very good reviews, and are kinda good. Plus, you'll get Danielle bearing down on you if you slag off Macca

  • FletcherB,

I am one of the three people in New Zealand who bought that album when it came out

And so am I... so who's the last?

Actually, I think it might have been a little more than 3.... although it's decided on artistic merit, not sales, he got a silver scroll award for Belle Of The Ball (iirc). so presumably it was slightly well known?

Me too.....it's a tune whether it's on 12 or 7. I was so obsessive then I bought them all on any format I could find. I own about half a dozen variations on the sleeve of Accidents Will Happen.

I want to see the buggers face whem I get him to sign it !

I got lots of the aforesaid obsessive collection signed in the late 90s. He was very gracious about it

  • Rob Hosking,

Now, I know you'll get this one..it's like The Attractions without EC.

Or the Jam without Weller. Which has happened - Foxton and Buckley have been touring with a Weller sound-alaike for a few years. You can see them on Youtube but I'm not going to link to them.

Good. The last thing you want when old farts have a reunion is New Material.

There was a very good series of Doonesbury about years ago when Duke found Elvis holed up on an ocean liner which just happened to be owned by Donald Trump.

They were all set to make huge bucks running Elvis Comeback concerts on the cruise ship when Elvis says 'Only one thang...I only do John Denver songs now.' So Elvis is rehearsing 'Rocky Mountain Hi-IGHHH!' in the background while Duke murmers to Trump 'We can drop him over the side. No one will know."

I'd kinda like to hear Elvis doing John Denver songs, TBT. If he had the full Vegas band behind him...

Ever hear Monty Python's version? It began with Eric Idle warbling 'You came on my pillow....' before the sound of someone being strangled.

    Apparently Denver's lawyers complained.

Elvis, the Costello version, in the WSJ

I'd kinda like to hear Elvis doing John Denver songs, TBT. If he had the full Vegas band behind him...

Denver's stuff was never really epic enough for the Elvis (the Cheeseburger version)'s Vegas treatment. I do think that he'd have done a mighty version of Alison though.

Or the Jam without Weller. Which has happened

Weller's only spoken to Bruce Foxton once since the Jam split and never to Rick Buckler. He's pretty harsh in his words on From The Jam, as they're called, but I can understand why, they look pretty bloody dire.

Still, like The Specials...all the original members apart from one.......

  • JP Hansen,

I am so annoyed with EC (the person) at the moment that I'd probably be happy with the Attractions and some dude who does a killer imitation of EC (the singer). Heh.

Oh, I was supposed to do this yesterday. All you need is Steve Riks.

    Elvis

    Macca

    Wilburies

My favourite story is Tom Waits recalling how his long-time partner Kathleen Brennan used to mis-hear "There's a bad moon a-rising" as "There's a bathroom on the right".

Not meaning to mondegreenjack this thread, but Kim Carnes's one & only megahit wasn't quite so interesting once it became clear that she wasn't singing she got thirty days inside .

  • 3410,

Just yesterday I came across 3(!) old mondegreens of mine and wondered whether I'd remember them long enough for the topic to surface again.

A couple from Big Star: for a long time I heard "Wish we had / a joint so bad" as "Wish we had / a joy so bad" ( In The Street .) Not much of a difference structurally, but I was disapointed to discover the real lyric, since the misheard one is better.

In When My Baby's Beside Me , I always heard "When my baby's beside me / I don't a-worry / When my..." as "When my baby's beside me / I go to work, and / When my..."

Worst of all is from the BBs' Don't Worry, Baby : "She told me 'Baby, when you race today, just / take along my love with you'" always came out as "She told me 'Baby, when you're wasted / then just take along my love with you'."
