And of course the V8 fiasco.
I’m so relieved NZTA ruled that out in Auckland. That was also shaping up as a case of council officials making stupid decisions and exposing the city to financial risk and massive disruption. The V8 promoters were sharks, basically.

And dirt digging reveals that Tony Maryatt earns more than his counterparts in Sydney and Melbourne.
I don't see Maryatt's tenure ending well at all. If he's not taken to the guillotine by pissed off Cantabrians, he might get hounded out of office à la Roger Estall.

And while we’re at it, RadioNZ is reporting that Singapore is making its politicians take pay cuts. I’d like to see the usual cargo-cult suspects come in defence of that.

so, basically he’s setting up the tourism marketing angle
“Christchurch: it’ll rock your world”.The overseas travel bloggers are getting a telling off from Mr Parker and the local tourism folk as well...
Parker was not surprised by the contents of the blog but said there was "a lot more to Christchurch than what it makes out".
"It is disappointing, but to be realistic, the quake was a major international event, so it's to be expected," Parker said.
He said the blog ignored the way the city was fighting back from the quakes.He doesn't seem to understand that tourists won't want to come here to see 'how we are fighting back' - they may have enough respect to leave us to get on with it and come later when things quiet down (or, deity-willing, stop!) and we have a viable city to offer them...
my suggestion for a new city promotion caption is:
"Christchurch, more than it's cracked up to be..." -

Though note that the smaller "City of Sydney" local authority area only has 182,000 people living in it - a tad smaller than the former Waitakere City part of the Auckland region, for instance (though economically larger, for sure).

The current "The City that Shines" is a wee bit dated. How about The City that Shakes (with the cathedral logo having a broken spire).

Frankly, there's a hell of a lot about Singapore that gives the "usual cargo-cult suspects" wood that creeps me out. That said, Marryatt's tin eared tone-deafness should amaze me but doesn't. In the end, I don't believe politicians and civil servants should be eating cat food and living in cardboard boxes. But when you're preaching "austerity", "wage restraint" and "fiscal discipline" to everyone else, it really does matter that you not only practice what you preach but are seen to do so.

There is to be an organised rally at the Council building (at high noon) protesting his pay rise - which by then, I would imagine, will have escalated to a call for his resignation...

Precisely. To preach restraint in public but to practice decadence and profligacy in private… well, Andrew Jackson and the Second Bank of the United States comes to mind. And despite the pay cuts, Singapore’s leaders will still earn a lot more than Obama, Cameron and Gillard.

If the Feb 1 protests fall on deaf ears, I can sense something even more direct in the works. Maybe not something out of 1789, but more like, for instance, a boss-napping/gherao/occupation.
