A partner of a colleague who studies marine ecology (yes our network is like a complex family tree) made the comment that any fish farming that uses carnivorous fish is not very smart. The problem, as noted above, is the fish feed is not ecologically sound and most predatory fish aren't as happy in farm environments.
She suggest instead that we should be farming herbivorous fish, apparently butterfish would be a great option. It's also tastes good.

So long as it's not carp.

I note that Insight on Radio NZ on Sunday morning at 8 am is looking at salmon farming in the Sounds.

Butterfish are delicious, but notoriously picky in taking a bait (there are weird things tried...) They are not shoal fish in my experience, but that experience is limited to Kaikoura & Moeraki & environs.

Agree with all of this comment. The product is a straightforward idea with some kind of market, and it got people to review it on a freebie. That's marketing 101. Can't decide if I'd be in this market. At face value, I'd say I'd trial it for a week, just to see if it's fun. Probably on the "for two adults" option. The value isn't terrible, and it might break me away from my same-old recipes.

We have done - and probably about to do - some stupid things.
Koi Carp. I thought they were put in drains to keep them clear of weeds. Then the drains flooded and took them into the Waikato. But this says otherwise but the damage is done.
Just like shitty turd beetles which it the latest to look likely to get a head start reading this opinion piece. This debate has been going on for a few years so it looks like someone wants the report to say what they really really want.

I once heard a trendy MP say at Parliament, I never thought I'd get sick of salmon. Now I know. To change the thread, has anyone noticed the dissonance between the upfront claim:
We stand behind our produce, our recipes and uncompromising service.
and the legal fineprint buried in the depths:
All representations, terms, warranties, guarantees, or conditions [blah blah blah] are excluded to the fullest extent permitted by law. [much more legalness followed by] You expressly acknowledge and agree that My Food Bag does not assume any obligation or liability for any advice given, and that all such Products are accepted by you entirely at your risk.
Well that convinces me Nadia and Theresa "stand behind our produce". Yeah right.
Don't get me started on what the fine print says about allergies.

Does it also say:
"we use deliberate confusion as a marketing tool"

This is the only NZ farmed Salmon to eat - none of the rubbish additives, the fish swim in swift-moving currents, the meat is paler and with hardly any striation because they're fit little buggers. Good enough for the Japanese royal family so I'm told.

Yep. And I thoroughly recommend both fresh & hot-smoked fish. If we cant catch our own, we gladly buy this - 'twas used for my mother's 86th & my 66th birthdays
in Feb/March this year...pricier than most but truly worth it!(NB: aside from eating the fish, I have nothing to do with Alpine Salmon.)
-
Good, that sorts salmon, thanks. Now what about palm oil and how we can avoid that in NZ for the sake of the orangutangs?
-
Islander, in reply to
Not eat Whittaker's choc or anything that incorporates palmoil -check labels/refuse to buy anything using palmoil;-
I LOVE orangs!
They can be rather brutal (males to females) but - next to us - they are the best tool users to date- -
It is hard to know whether there is palm oil in any product because it goes by a lot of different names, usually not palm oil.

Oh surely not! I'm heart broken! That's my favouritest chocolate, especially considering I rely on care packages from my mum to get any.

Very pretty use of Flash. But why does their co.nz redirect into a .com.au. You don't have to do that.

I plead momentary brain-fade, caused by over- indulgence of... Whittakers Peanutbutter chocolate-(the white&rasberry is also very good.)

I am not a chocolate fan but I do like the odd piece of Whittakers dark chocs. Alas, if I get a block, t'other can almost hoover it up. I find it reasonably priced too.
I thought the site was cute too Rich . I have no answer to your query though. :) -

It's about the only sweet stuff I eat - aside from dried fruit

Nyum. I like Green and Black's Maya Gold: orangey and cinnamony and dark.....Now off to Holy Smoke for bacon.
Caught flounder last night in Wordsworth Street ;-) and that was good shown the frying pan briefly with lemon and butter.

Islander, in reply to
Ooo, another one to try out - thanks Hebe!
Islander who had a lagoon roe-rich flounder 2 nights ago, briefly sizzled in butter and eaten with slices from my freshly-baked bread- -
