yeah, sad eh ?...that after 3 years a pecking order becomes established and boring predictablity sets in.
pollywog, your whining is ruining my Friday.
The great thing abut an online forum is that if you don't like it you can leave with one click.
If you don't like the "scene" then don't stay.
And start your own forum, if you think you can do a better job than Russell.

i like people with an air of mystery:)
Well, it is a mystery to me what exactly you are complaining about.
-
God i hope people never get to know me that well.
As far as I'm concerned, you're in no danger.
-
Oh I don't know.

sorry scotty, but you should never let anything people say online ruin anything about your real life, least of all for a whole day and yeah, the other great thing about forums is, you can ignore posts and not reply at all
Well, it is a mystery to me what exactly you are complaining about.
and i'll do my utmost to keep it that way. keep the fuckers guessing i say but comparing personas in virtual communities to their real life alter egos would make for an interesting study though, don't you think. like are you a re-creation in your own best image ?
As far as I'm concerned, you're in no danger.
what... no death threats ? and dont worry, i won't ever turn up to a PA 'meet the geeks' evening. i'll probably say i will then not show :)

I think this needs addressing:
as long as they agree with the mob other wise they dont stick around long. FFS just look what happened to conseismal, he calls bullshit on a mob member and gets shat on.
He's someone who has simply shown himself incapable of the kind of discussion people enjoy this place for. He winds people up and belittles them, he expresses himself poorly and he seems to have an immovable chip on his shoulder.
But even so, I've actually carried out a correspondence with him in the hope of finding a way that he can continue. In the end, I don't think he really wanted a solution, but I've taken my own time to try and negotiate it.
As I have with you personally, which is why it disappoints me that you feel able to insult me and sit in judgement of my management of discussions. I don't see why you have to be such a jerk.
I actually take some pride in how few people I've banned and how few posts I've deleted. I generally don't act on complaints from other users about difficult contributors.
I hope Steven Crawford won't mind me recalling that he got into some terrible scrapes early on, and I defended him because I could see that the problem wasn't his lack of good faith, but trouble in expressing himself accurately, partly because of his dyslexia. These days, he's got it down, whether he's passing on his experience, or passing some dry wit. PAS and Steven have been good for each other, and I'm proud of that.
i call bullshit i get shat on. ben puts forward something contrary to the mob opinion he gets shat on. clive gives his take on things and gets shat on.
How about instead of "calling bullshit" you simply have a discussion; share your views and your experiences? Instead of trying to get in one more insult you tried to be constructive? If you're offended by something someone writes, actually saying you're offended, rather than flaming them back?
look at the anti trotter stuff. what would happen if a lone dissenter/ trotter supporter or even trotter turned up himself ? he'd get shat on.
No, he'd get disagreed with. I did try and participate on Trotter's site, but he seems to have blocked my comment in advance. But whatever, it's his site.
cactus kate puts forward something contrary she gets shat on.
You're kidding. That would be the same Cactus Kate who pretty much lost the plot on being even mildly criticised, and whose previous appearance here featured her promise to continue a bizarre vendetta against Keith Ng. I think she gets a good run in the circumstances.
brickley puts something out ther and even russell shits on him. not excactly a good example to follow but hey if thats the tune the pipers playing then lets all be lemmings.
I did snap at Brickley a couple of times, and promptly apologised. But Brickley can bring a bit of an air of contempt to proceedings, which I don't enjoy. I do like his writing.
Basically, a desire to keep discussions healthy is not the same thing as everyone having to agree. The best illustration is a comparison of the two big copyright threads: the original epic and the more recent one for the ACTA post.
In the latter one there's much furious disagreement and occasional loss of temper, but a lot of knowledge got out, and people even gradually began to acknowledge some wisdom in each others' arguments.
The difference from the first one? The absence of one individual, who had made himself the star of the first thread by insulting people and being deliberately disingenuous. That was a bit of a learning experience for me -- I should have got shot of him much sooner, but I wanted to give him a chance, and I didn't want to be seen to be retaliating for his insulting comments about me (his first ever comment was basically defamatory).
I don't have the systematised knowledge Emma has gathered for managing discussions -- I go more on feel, and on a belief in good faith. If people come here with chips on their shoulders, it just won't work.
Okay, my wine glass is empty now. Have a nice weekend, everyone.
-
Cheers Russell! Saluting you and the site with a very nice Waipara sauv-blanc a friend has just left for me-

Here's Emma's thread about moderating

I've noticed new people joining discussions here without any fuss
as long as they agree with the mob other wise they dont stick around long.
Yet, we still have the likes of Brickley Paiste, and, for that matter, Craig Ranapia, who often disagrees with the majority of posters here on NZ political matters. You’re just asking for special treatment: if people put forward views that most other posters happen to disagee with, they should be treated with kid gloves. Fuck that: If you’re going to be controversial, own it, I say. I think you’re just a bit too tender for internet discussion forums, polly.
the expectation here and most forums is that we are all supposed to have the same opinion and write it in the same manner.
I’m not sure what “write in the same nanner” is supposed to mean. If you can’t see the difference in writing style of posters here then you just ain’t paying attention. As for the same opinion, have you not noticed all the arguments that take place here? Just the other day I disagreed (as best as I can tell) with the majority opinion on the “name suppression” issue; I certainly disagreed with Russell’s view. But I didn’t seem to get “shat on” too much. I like to think in part it’s because I didn’t act like a whiny jerk. You should try it sometime.

Anyway pollywog, you can come back, but do it with a song in your heart.
-
PAS and Steven have been good for each other
Those difficult beginnigs must have been before my time, but hear hear on how great it is that you stuck with him and he with us.
-
Just the other day I disagreed (as best as I can tell) ..
Quite ably and vigorously, as I recall ;-)
-
This has turned into a really interesting thread.
While pollywog's innocent victim routine seems a little rehearsed, I thought that some (minority) of the responses kind of backed up his argument. Just saying.
I blame The Winds.

I blame The Winds.
People have been a bit crabby for the past couple of weeks. Time of year.
-
Not the Moon, Legbreak?
I am still - because I have this deeply engrained suspicious side to my perception of life the universe & everything - that pollywog turned up conveniently close to someone who has been a troll - but hey, if that turns out not to be the case, I'm happy to hear her/him/it speak.
Thus far, I am totally unimpressed.
-
Interesting eh?
"The time of year" doesnt turn up around Matariki - it's generally the fervid rushrush/buybuy Xmas season (and I use Xmas advisedly - all the religious bits seem to have been thoroughly drained away, blood from a vein, in favour of fergeddit just SPEND>) -
Damn. I went away from this thread and missed the fireworks. My reason for dipping out was my early attempts as one of those 'new posters' to express an opinion. I think I used the word 'denier' and 'delusional' in the same sentence, which in hindsight wasn't so clever, and someone called me on it.
So I've been reading the blogs, trying to pick up some tips on etiquette, and dipping into the 'Word of the Year' debate, which is just light and tasty, and seemed safe enough.
Clearly my fears were unfounded because I don't think I'd know how to offend people as much as some of the posts in this thread.
In the midst of all this is some serious stuff. It is a shame that the mode of debate overshadowed the debate.
I'm not wanting to kiss arse, but isn't this Russell's house? So perhaps we should stop crapping on the carpet... We've had enough 'gentleman of league' indiscretions for one year.
-

Heh. I believe we've never had a flame war in a Word of the Year thread. People are too busy trying to serve each other with neologisms.
-
recordari - as someone who lurked for nearly a year, and came late to the place
"this is Russell's house, so stop crapping on the carpet"
is *exactly* what I would emphasize.
I'm not blameless, but I do apologise when necessary: I am beginning to find the juvenile behaviours of some really like the "the thread that would not die" postings and just wondering what sets these people off...meantime, all kinds of good come out of this site!
Go check "stroke" and see what wonderous things have been accomplished, and are being quietly accomplished.
-
And one of those neologisms has - erm, legs-
-
I don't know what a neologism is but it sounds a bit like this to me.
-

Absolutely. I had a pile of these (I bought five in the first week) and dished them out to family and friends that came over.
Have they re-stocked, as need some more for Christmas.
Frankly, I can't think of a better present. It gives twice, or maybe dozens of times...
Oh, and go the Frank Zappa!! It's Zapparific! Is that one?
-
Now that everyone told his little story about trolls, I am still amused how a discussion can turn out to be a coffee house talk...:)
The Zappa post is amazing !!!
-
Coffee-house talk???
