If you are my friend, stand up before me
and scatter the grace that's in your eyes.Sappho

Metafilter, which I frequent, has a Bosniak member who posted a couple of harrowing accounts of being in Sarajevo here and here.
...in reality, I didn't win, Karadžić did. Around the time my parents were killed, he said of Sarajevo that soon one wouldn't count those killed, one would count those who survived. I suppose it was a wish of his, but as a wish it came true. Most of my school friends and neighbors and much of my family died or disappeared. Of my classmates in school, more than half died. Everyone I know has problems from the war still. In fifteen years I've never had a good night's sleep like I did in my little room in the house of my parents.

Well, Happy Birthay Mr. Brown. May tommorrows hangover be mild and somewhat pleasant. ;-)

Oh, and the "hiding in plain sight" thing is bullshit. If Serbia weren't desperate to get into the EU he would be happily peddling quackery still. Lots of people knew where he was but there was no will to hand him over. (see 1, 2. "Hiding" is face-saving spin for "sheltered by influential people in the Serb establishment and large numbers of ordinary people who thought he was a great guy", and we ought not to repeat it.

On the drummer thing.
many years back, 69 or 70 if my memory serves me well, I was at a party in Blackheath, saarf east London. A certain Ginger Baker performed a little party trick. Sitting backwards on a chair at the top of quite a long flight of stairs he flicked himself backwards and proceeded to fend off stair-treads as he fell, landing on his feet at the bottom. This, he said, demonstrated his outstanding co-ordination. Apparently. -
Many happy returns, Russell. Feel free to celebrate with a truly splendid air-drum solo.

Happy Birthday, sir.
I'm sure I'm not alone in looking forward to another year of insightful and searing posts about a bunch of interesting stuff, so let me just take this moment to say...thank you.

HB Russell.
Wrt the health quackery, I've never been a believer in any of those cures or methods but I think it is best exemplified by that fact that no "health" medicines are supplied with child-proof lids. That's because they know that anyone can gobble as many as they like and there will be little or no effect. -
Happy Birthday Russell. Let us know how the HD is... :)
-
Did I mention it's my birthday?
No. But Facebook did.

Happy Birthday us!
I hope yours is better than mine. My Zune died last night (6 months old!) and I've already had the limp rendition of Happy Birthday sung to be at my obligatory office morning tea.

Happy birthday to you....
I feel the inexplicable need to exclaim that I am not from Lesbos, but I do like women...
Also, I dont know exactly what a loinge is, but maybe what you do in it or to it, should not be shared with the public?

One totally geeky point. They said at the launch the broadcasts would be 1080i, but the HDMI connection is showing up as 720p. I guess I should make a phone call before poking around in settings ...

I'm expecting the Tour de France to look very sexy indeed
Is there something you want to tell us about cycle shorts? We'll be very understanding and almost not prurient at all.

Happy Birthday Russell!
Lesbians of Lesbos - You're still OED definition 1 ... is it the tourism that's getting you down..?

so prtuttyI did notice, and I thought that the non-HD picture looked amazing. Sky can toggle the bandwidth for individual channels at will, and I think they're chucking quite a bit into the sports channels at the moment.

Be as geeky as it takes,Russell. Our sky hd is to be installed in a couple of weeks and it can only be of assistance if you adivise us of ,and smooth, the process.
Great timing for the installation too! Enjoy the new toy...

Happy birthday!
The Lesbos thing begs the question: what do they call women of the Sapphic persuasion on said island?

Tourist attractions.

Thanks for the link to Karadžić's site. I'm very happy to have him caught - I stayed in Sarajevo about a month ago and after hearing and seeing some of what what done, and the lingering effects all these years later then I'm keen for as close as we can get to justice.

I knew a lesbian couple who went to Lesbos for a holiday. One of them came back pregnant. True story.

All this Greek islandry has reminded me of my favourite blend of classics, pop culture and comic opera, The Heroine Barbarian:
I travel with a poet who is perky and parthenian
And scribbles her hexameters in Linear Mycenian
(And many have attempted, by a host of methods mystical,
To tell if our relationship's sororal or sapphistical). -
Will we be Drinking Liberally tonight?
