Conservapedia, Godtube...jeez wayne - what's next? JesusSpace?
BTW, you know that kinda cool science/nature/boardgames/geeky toys/telescope shop Nature Discoveries? www.nature.co.nz
Paid any attention to their tagline: Helping you Explore the Wonders of Creation
A few years ago these guys used to stock a range of fauxscience religious books. Gone are the books but the creation comment is interesting.
Be interested to hear if anyone has spoken to staff in the stores about it....

Why yes ...
Actually not a real website so much as a placeholder set up to game Google ads.

Why own a business if you can't use it to push your viewpoints?

That Christ-follower vs. Christian series of clips is bizarre - I don't see the value of ditching the name 'Christian' and the associated centuries of history. After all, that's half the point of being a Christian (or any religion) - it provides you with a connection to the past, validating and locating you within the shared history of the religion. Sure, there are great chunks of that history you'd want to distance yourself from, but there's also plenty of good stuff, too.

The Independent has a couple of articles about the UK's equivalent of the DPB and getting people off benefits and back into employment.
I thought the parallels with godzone were interesting (as probably are the differences).

Mark,
Russell, unless you are going to start to shit on all religions equally (yes, even *gasp* Islam!), maybe you should give the anti-Christian stuff a rest. It's getting boring.
-
It's not anti-Christian stuff, it's anti loopy-christian stuff.
A small group that seem to have a very loud voice and unfortunately seem to have tainted our view of what the term 'Christian' means. -

I thought I made it clear that I thought the ad parody clips were clever and interesting - I'm intrigued to know what's going on - more so than just picking out the ill-science creationist stuff.
And, well, the clowning stuff is pretty freaky. I don't see how pointing that out is an attack on all Christianity.

First, and just to be clear...that other Mark above is in no way aligned with this one, nor are opinions expressed necessarily shared by the management of this organic entity. So issuing of fatwah on my ass thanx.
RB, you have the winning format, we both know it. I've bought whiskey from the Whiskey Galore web site, loved to see Karajoz up there on your site, won't be buying a Vodafone contract and 3G phone - but the point is, that's my prerogative, just as it's my prerogative to view or not view the ads.
Subs don't work, as the Herald is finding out these days - people have to know/care what is on the web site and then they have to decide whether subs outweigh food on the table (or more usually the SKY sub or that Friday night out with mates).
These sites democratise knowledge. For that reason they are valued by the more media-savvy advertisers.
Nobody says we HAVE to look at the pretty pictures, but I'm with you - if they make the thing economically viable, then that's the way the world works.
The online community being notoriously tight-fisted about stuff like this I don't think it can work any other way.
And the wirdness of the God-botherer web sites? Hey, just say no! There's no ethereal hand guiding you mouse and cursor is there? -
merc,
RB, I think you deserve your own (well paid) gig on TV.

You may well think so, but I couldn't possibly comment.

Wow, Mark.
I think you're really wide of the mark, I don't think our Russ was poking fun at all. I urge you to read what Russell said again, if you can wipe the scales from your eyes for just a moment.
-
And another thing, this is Russell's site, he can shit on whatever the hell he wants to without answering to you or anyone else.
(But he still wasn't shitting on what you seem to think he was shitting on.)
-
Mark,
Ah, I think Russell can look after himself there Morgan.

Actually, I have often relied on Morgan's volunteer work as a proofreader ;-)

Fox News breaking headline: Scooter Libby found Not Guilty of lying
to the FBI. You could not make this shit up.Does anyone know SKY TV's reasoning behind giving us Fox News (the propaganda arm of the US Republican party) over Al Jazeera - other than the Murdoch connection?
-
That Sky TV news drives me nuts, on the rare occasions I am in a hotel and thus get to see it. It's supposedly NZ news but there's little local in it, just lots and lots of Oz.
I'd be quite interested to know what the Islamic fundamentalist position is on evolution, or for that matter the Jewish fundamentalist position. I suspect it's not that different from Christian creationists? It's not something I've really thought about much, as the Christian creationists are much more in my face.
-
I ordered the Outfoxed movie a couple of years ago - they are comedy to watch but one heck of a sad indictment on a culture that generally refuses to question what they're hearing.
The mac ad parodies were clever on a few levels - I guess it's nice to hear an alternative expression of someone following Jesus - but carry on like that and the'll end up replicating the dork'ness they are distancing themselves from. Instead of Christians, we'll have Christollers.

National's ideas on forestry carbon credits deserves a bit more of a reasoned response. That the trees were planted before Kyoto will remain true no matter who gets the credits - the Government or foresters. If it's unfair for one party to reap any unforeseen benefit then it's unfair for both.
National's proposal that a proportion go to foresters is reasonable and equitable and the idea that individuals can play a part in the Kyoto process should be something to be encouraged.

Say... you reckon you might be able to dance?

Span: "the Jewish fundamentalist position"
OK, here's the deal. Fundamentalist is not really a word you can apply to Jews. The reason is that in Christianity fundamentalism is a specific Protestant doctrine which asserts the inerrant and literal truth of their bible (of course this presents problems of internal consistency let alone consistency with the observable world but let's leave that for now).
I think you're using "fundamentalist" as a synonym for "extremist" or neotraditional or reactionary. There are various Jewish groups that might be classed under that head... but they are all very Jewish in that far from interpreting scripture literally, they work hard at inferring non-literal conclusions from it, in accordance with their various rabbinical traditions. In that sense they are as far from fundamentalists as it is possible to be.
Like Islam, and unlike most Christian denominations, Judaism does not have a rigid, top-down doctrine. So there is no unitary position on evolution. My brother-in-law, who is an Orthodox rabbi, was very taken with the intelligent design crowd. He could meet another Orthodox rabbi, from a different rabbinical tradition, who thinks evolution is true, and they could have a jolly good discussion about it, and cite rabbincal authorities, and so on. And they might think each other wrong, but they wouldn't label each other "bad Jew" or say "you can't believe that and still be a Jew".
Being a good Orthodox Jew is about following Jewish law as defined in rabbinical tradition, not about having a view on evolution. Which in turn relates to the basic Jewish attitude that doing what God wants us do is much more important than believing things about God. All the study of Torah is about is figuring out what God wants us to do, not discovering secrets of the universe or elaborating a consistent theological view. Come to think of it, in theory that's true of being a good Reform Jew, although the Orthodox would say that the Reform are badly mistaken about what God wants us to do. A bad Jew is one who does not practice and who does not study Torah. (I am a bad Jew).
Yeah, you will find Jews in the intelligent design or creationist camps, as well as evolutionist. But they are allowed to disagree. It is not a matter that is essential to the practice of Judaism, which as a religion is far more about practice than anything else.
There is actually a Wikipedia article on this very topic.

Does anyone know SKY TV's reasoning behind giving us Fox News (the propaganda arm of the US Republican party) over Al Jazeera - other than the Murdoch connection?
The Murdoch connection is the obvious overriding reason..Sky is Murdoch, and he sees Fox as a competitor for CNN & the BBC, and indeed, there are many who see it as the voice of reason. I had that conversation with a Canadian guy, US based, in the weekend who insisted they were the only network giving balance.
That CNN is seen by the likes of him as screamingly lefty seems to me to be an indication how far to the right the centre is in the US of A these days.
We have Al Jazzera in English too, and it's this lefties news channel of choice, being largely staffed by frustrated ex BBC sorts (although I do have problems with the Click-Online guy analysing news..), and seems to have the balance (and the access, which is the crucial part) that most of the others simply lack. Plus they maintain permanent staffs in many of the places where the BBC and CNN use freelancers.
They had a crew on the ground at the Jogja airport fireball yesterday before the rest were reporting it (and even then CNN were only able to take a feed from Metro TV, the local news channel).

I'm interested in finding thee torrent of the Front Line doco that Russell mentioned. No luck so far ... be great if someone could point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance.

3 cheers for Triangle TV for putting on al Jazeera, it puts BBC world to shame, let alone the cheerful fascist pantomime that is Fox ‘news’. Shame on Prime for even broadcasting it to a sentient audience.
Russell, please don't dance with the stars, even if you're a regular John Travolta on the floor. It's like that saying: a gentleman is someone who can play the piano accordion... but doesn't.
'Bad Jew' or no, thanks for the interesting post on the judaic position Stephen, informative and heartening.
