We've been to all the North Shore games and it's been brilliant entertainment. The NZ girls have shown skill, courage, fitness and a love of football. I'm glad I could get to the games though. As a football fan/player/coach/father of three playing kids I suppose I might be ever so slightly biased. But isn't the TV3 news coverage of a FIFA World Cup Tournament just a bit, er, crap?

Last Saturday the Herald posted this online. It was an explanation by Eugene Bingham of the Key questions. It ended rather abruptly I thought, but by Sunday it was no longer available on the Election 08 menu online.

If Labour doesn't form a government, it can certainly spend the next three years demanding inquiries and quoting the racing chapter in the Hollow Men ...
The Hollow Men was published in 2006, too long ago to form the basis of any such demand by Labour.

do you seriously think that Helen gets more sympathetic coverage from the Herald than JohnKey does?From my point of view it has looked like the Herald, as well as all the tv news, has smiled benevolently at Key while being somewhat unforgiving to Clark.
Not wishing to imply that there is any bias going on, more thinking that they all want to be seen as having 'backed a winner' if/when we get a change at the helm.

Last Saturday the Herald posted this online. It was an explanation by Eugene Bingham of the Key questions.
In which he seems to strongly imply that "Batman" was Mike Williams. If so, my head spins at the blithering idiocy of Williams doing that.
Also, just got a call from someone at the Herald: the Bingham byline on the editorial I linked to above was a mistake -- their system automatically populated the byline field with Bingham's name because it was in the copy.

How can they cheat? I'd imagine FIFA want to see birth certificates when they register players.

I know players who have represented NZ at age grade level in other sports, and never been asked for a birth certificate. You register at 5 or 7 or 8 or whatever, and they keep copying the date over.
There's a tip for parents of young kids - add a 1 to their year of birth when you sign them up for their first sports teams, just in case.
And there was that gymnast in Beijing that they specifically avoided asking about her age.

Yup, that's what I always do. And you should see their faces when I tell them that my little champ was born in the year twenty thousand and eleven. Ohhhh, they go, and aaaahhhhh.

That'd be coz it's women's sports, and not netball. Seriously. I don't usually accord too much credence to the "Poor us" cries of the women I know, but when it comes to the blatant imbalance on sports coverage they're bang on the money. We've got some of the best women's sports teams in the world, but you wouldn't know it.
Hopefully I'll see you at the Lessig talk, Russell. For a question, ask if he sees the In Re Bilski ruling - particularly if it leads to a sea change in how business method patent cases are decided - as leading to a change in the USTR's position on patents in fora such as TRIPS. Or does he expect it to be yet another case of "Do as we say, not as we do"?

But how many times has Mike Williams reversed the usual traffic flow between gob and anus and not had a damn thing happen? He's either raking in a lot of money we don't know about or had a locked filing cabinet somewhere full of blackmail material. :)

When the economy collapses in democracies you vote in a new government. If the economy collapses here there is no pressure-release valve so when things get really bad your only recourse is "social instability" of the sort we saw centred on Tiananmen Square in 1989, when China was struggling with 24% inflation, rampant corruption (at levels we see again today) and a collapsing economy.
imho the guy needs to get out of his office and onto the streets for a brief stretch of the legs and a natter with these 'revolutionaries'.
related to Meurant, the one thing that is rarely said about the corruption of the CCP is that having so much in the way of 'in party' freebies, kind of negates or undercuts the potential influence of private enterprise guys like Meurant on the direction of government policy.

APN selling the Herald is big news, but hardly anyone has mentioned this in the discussion. Is this an indication of how few web-savvy people - especially of a certain age - care about mainstream media? Or about the Herald?
Does it mean the Listener is being sold as well? It could be said that someone actually buying it would be news in itself. But I can imagine an overseas buyer just kissing goodbye to a once important national outlet that still has the potential to be brought back to life. -

My point was, the IOC avoided as much as possible having that information themselves. They trusted the Chinese Olympic Committee, and stated as such. FIFA is probably running the same line.

The same story was just as wothy of an inquiry during 2006, 2007 or 2008. What form could the Labour Party possibly use to start demanding an inquiry in 2009 without looking like hypocrites?
And what if John Key PM were to comply? A finding of racing lobby corruption would taint the National government of 1999 and the the Labour government of 2000 - 2008. John Key was not a member of either, unlike the leader of any Labour opposition...
