God, sorry to have hijacked the thread on a throwaway line several pages back!
If you ask nicely, there is a tub of rather nasty looking, almost black, chilli paste under the counter that has brought me to my knees in the past.
Oh, I have 1 of those in the fridge and 2 or 3 in the freezer. While my brother was at Lincoln between '04 - '06 I would have him bring a tub up every time he came home. A dollup in home made peanut satay sauce is to die for.
My brother'd actually also bring skewers of their chicken, tubs of tzatziki and even their pita breads up on the plane and we'd make up our own Greek Recipe souvlakis on the BBQ once we got him home from the airport. Last trip home he bought 2 ice-cream containers full of their chicken skewers. Anyone got an insight into how they're marinated?
My wife and I have been known to take a drive to Christchurch while staying with my folks in Blenheim for the sole purpose of getting Greek recipe souvlakis and Hilliers pies. The Spagalimis pizzas (mexican, apricot chicken) sadly didn't hold up to my memory of them from my student days.
Oh, for those playing at home with tubs of TGR chilli sauce, I've found a decent substitute for the Greek Recipe pitas at pak n save - they're called "mediterranean pizza bases" and are located with the other pita products in the breads aisle.

Sounds to me like a policy of, free stuff for staff only has been taken to the nth degree of absurdity. He had it in for her over something I take it?

No idea. And I'm not even sure that what I read is accurate anyway.
If he did have it in for her, I guess this will provide a salutory lesson of some sort.

That's next to Big Gary's - home of the biggest hotdogs in NZ!
Best by far has to be the egyptian souvlaki place on Papanui Rd. So good even us lazy students used to drive from Riccarton to eat there.

Regarding Jane Clifton - now she writes well.
As for her take on politics I always thought I could detect a slight centre-right bias in her writing. At the same time though, I figured that that sense might itself have stemmed from my own lefty views. This changed somewhat when I read her 'no, nothing to see here, move along' piece on the Hager book. This sort of writing, I thought, could only come from someone who was fairly pro-National. Not that that matters, I guess; everyone's entitled to their political colours.
The thing that bugs me more about her writing is the 'politics is a game' cynicism. I can imagine that covering the political beat for so long could easily instill that in a person. But, nevertheless, there are genuine differences between our political parties, and their different positions are not just matters of spin but have real world consequences. So it would be nice to read the actual issues analysed every once in a while.

I agree with you about Joanne Black and Pamela Stirling. When I saw that North and South had a really good article on the smacking issue/child abuse something in me snapped. N and S is supposed to be the right wing one but Black has been sneering at the smacking bill for weeks now with no in-depth thought at all - I know it's just a bit of a gossip column but it still made me see red and I've just sent a long letter to the editor referring to their media kit and how it describes the readership as having a female skew and a well off baby boomer factor. As someone who fits both those bills (apart from the well off!) I'm incensed that the watered down mag we now have is considered to be targeting me! Arghh! I've been reading the Listener since about 1970 - it used to be GREAT.

I too have been hunting high and low for a true Souvlaki vendor in AK...no dice.
I'm sure this must be a reflection of immigration patterns. Could it be that Christchurch somehow ended up with a large Greek community, and hence the big souvlaki scene.

marinade?
try north africa spice-sauces like harissa. it's not too expensive, and if you leave it on lamb long enough it coats the outer 2-3mm of the meat.
then, try not to cook the lamb past mid-rare, and for god's sake, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES do you cut the fat off. the fat should leach into the meat and bring the flavours with it.
worried about heart/waistline? just eat less...
another trick is sumac, touch of coriander/cumin, mixed with olive oil. make a relatively dry paste and apply that to your lamb before cooking it.
