  • Grant McDougall,

No, Laidlaw was Labour, beating Denis Welsh (ex-Listener) of the Alliance in the by-election.

Ken Grey won the nomination for a safe Labour seat, so it’s reasonable to count him too.

    Doh! You are entirely correct.

  • jeremy gray,

Can someone clarify The Law on this? I thought we weren't obliged to give our name unless we were arrested? I would have declined politely and walked away. Would I have then been arrested?

My understanding is you are required to give your name, address and occupation and nothing else, including no need to show ID to prove it. The community law center has a sheet here - http://www.communitylaw.org.nz/fileadmin/documents/police_powers_to_stop_and_search.pdf
Of course, if you ask an officer their number they are obliged to give it to you as well.

And the version I heard (though don't agree with) is: A Conservative is a Liberal who has been mugged.

  • Dinah Dunavan,

Here in the Waitaki Electorate I'm feeling decidedly gloomy about my electorate vote. I could vote for Jacqui Dean, but I've never heard her say anything that I agreed with; or David Parker, but don't get me started on what a weasle he is. A vote for any other candidate is a protest vote and I've always liked to think my vote counted.
That's why I like MMP, at least one of my votes count.

  • Grant McDougall,

So is The Standard alleging National MPs try to run protesters down with their cars.

Fact: In 1990 Bill Birch ran over student protester Felix Geiringer at Otago University. I know, as I was at the same protest. I wouldn't be surprised if Kyle Matthews had been in the vicinity, either.

The Grey Lynn tribe sounds like they should all vote for Green candidate Denise Roche instead of Tizard to keep Kaye out. I was at a canddiates' meeting on Waiheke Island and Kaye *constantly* leafed through her folder, not just when she had lost interest.

Aw, harden up. I just get my alliteration on right back, because the likes of D4J/Redbaiter really are crepuscular cunny-slapping cretins

  • Hilary Stace,

Re Bill Birch running over Felix Geiringer - there was a great fundraising t-shirt made following that incident with bloody tyre marks across it. What surprised me was there was very little media outrage at the incident.

Te Papa should have an exhibition of political t-shirts sometime. That would be interesting.

Fuck, talk about your undesired mental images. I know that one of them has actually managed to breed, against all rules of logic and divine justice, but I'd rather not be reminded of it...

Actually, I was going to high school in Auckland at the time.

Though, events of legend and all that.

I had a meeting with Rodney Hide once at the students association down here. He spent all the time that he wasn't talking (and some of the time he was) playing with his cell phone. Not making calls or texting (unless it was on silent and non-vibrate), but spinning it around, pushing buttons to read stuff, picking it up and putting it down, checking the screen.

I'll give grudging respect to anyone on the political spectrum if they've got brains and work hard. He lost any chance of that from me by asking for a meeting and then not having any interest in talking to us about the concerns of the 15,000 students we were representing.

  • Hilary Stace,

By the way, the 1990 election was really depressing. The left was divided and decimated. I remember one election meeting when Prime Minister for a few minutes, Mike Moore, spoke for about half an hour without getting to a full stop in his monologue, and the whole time being totally incomprehensible.

It's actually quite a tribute to Helen C's rebuilding skills that there is a whole new generation of post Rogernomics political activists of the Left. At least there is in Wellington.

Until Mr. Best get a grip on the fine art of (linky) love -- rather than posting ten thousand word screeds -- I just scroll past anything that has his name on it. And anyone who says they don't "know enough" about Obama after almost two years on the campaign trail and near-constant media scrutiny (but say Sarah Palin is competent to be PoTUS when nobody knew shit about her before the GOP Convention), well... Hate to say this but you're either got serious learning disabilities or happen to be a big fat liar.

Family First are "comprehensively" against abortion?

"Parental notification automatically of teenage pregnancy and abortion except in exceptional circumstances approved by the court"

I wonder what an "exceptional circumstance" is and why anyone would call it an abortion (but I won't be wondering for long if they respond to my email:).

Got me confused a little bit because the Family Party is running on a pro-abortion policy as are the Kiwi Party. But these guys aren't even a political party.

    Politics is weird.

Just back in from interviewing Professor Lawrence Lessig.

He flies straight back to the US today, and on return will go directly to a campaign office and join his wife, working the phones for Obama.

    Hi Grant,

Family First are "comprehensively" against abortion?

That's what i took from this bit ...

Amend the law to protect the unborn children from conception (18,000 abortions per year represents the worst of child abuse)

Which does, I will grant you, appear to contradict the part you quoted.

  • Joe Wylie,

The Grey Lynn tribe is made up of intellectuals who value ideas more than things. They are well-educated, highly principled, socially aware, culturally sophisticated people. They believe in collective social responsibility, and that individuals should make a difference by making the world a better place.

I haven't lived in Grey Lynn since it was a collection of mud huts clustered around Harvest Wholefoods. Sounds like it was probably a shade more, um, diverse back then. Does anyone know if there are still a bunch of police staff houses in Castle Street? The guy who was in the Blue Squad was a surprisingly nice neighbour ("Those people should never've come here but we got a job to do"). There was also a notorious plumber whose kids were responsible for 90+% of local crime. Apart from him I guess most of the natives were averagely, if not highly, principled. As I no longer live there I guess Mr. 8 Tribes is on the money.
