One of these days you'll have to meet my Mum. She's at the Auck Phil or NZSO concerts every 2nd Fri and Sat, and she goes to the Bridgeway Cinema with her friend, Joan, where they watch these filmed operas that go on for hours. She's a real buff.

Your niece and nephew used to love It's a Long Way to the Shop and Highway to Hell when we were in Kuwait, I never had a problem with it (er, seeing as it was me playing it ahem).
Too much reggae and hefty dub in Tom's childhood meant his chances of being a metal fan were always fairly slim. He absolutely hates metal and says the only guitar music he vaguely likes is classic punk. Sam on the other hand is turning into an alt-rock nerd. Taught himself all that Beck stuff from the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack on guitar.

I can safely say I have the following in my personal playlist, in equal measure:
Punk, metal, reggae, ska, world, new wave, proto-techno, alt, British Invasion, psych, arena rock, stage musicals... to name a few.
Mind you, John Peel was pretty eclectic too. And to those who knock opera, Iva Davies (Icehouse) & Bruce Dickinson (Iron Maiden) are on record saying they're operatically trained.

I don't know if I've told this story before, but when I was living in London, this guy came stumbling into the pub where I worked to ask for directions to somewhere or other. He stayed and had a drink and we got chatting. He had on this guitar pendant thing, and when I asked he said he was in a band. Would I know it? I asked him. You might, he replied, it's called Iron Maiden. I indicated that Metal wasn't my favourite thing. And he said, neither was it his. He loved classical music. I have no recall of his name or even what he looked like, just that he was lovely guy.

And may I venture, it could be the the abundance of major chords that seems strange to the modern ear. Accustomed, as it has become, to the minors and sevenths, and that other thing..Damn second ETA and it still doesnt sound right. oh well...

There should be 80 seats in parliament 70 electorate and 10 list seats...
Then it wouldn't be MMP and it wouldn't be proportional representation. In fact, that's even less proportional than Supplementary Member. And with only 41 required for a majority the pool of talent would be much smaller. There'd be hardly any government backbenchers - nearly everyone in the governing party or parties would be either a minister or a select committee chair.

There's something... compelling... about it all. And to go straight from an overture that wouldn't be out of place in something by Wagner to the spoken word intro that just goes.... whack...

For a period in 1983, two songs written and produced by Steinman held the top two positions on the Billboard singles chart, with "Total Eclipse of the Heart" at number one, and "Making Love out of Nothing at All", performed by Air Supply, at number two.

Interestingly, Meat Loaf was originally to have recorded that particular album, but he was more than a bit knackered after 3 years of non-stop touring. So Steinman performed all the songs himself.

Considering the sap that Air Supply usually put out, "Making Love" was a vast improvement. In the words of Steinman, "two boring idiots from Australia. Working with them was almost an accident."
