Shadow was impressive at the Powerstation back in 2011, and this live show mix with Cut Chemist featuring some pretty obscure soul tracks is one of my all-time favourites - all done from 7" vinyls . I'm hoping he might do a side show...

I'm not quite sure I like the sound of "atmospheric death metal" - although my tastes do tend towards the heavy, but I did quite like this quote:
"We're not about making money, that's why we have jobs. We really love playing this music and it excites me like nothing else."
These artists ain't starving to maintain their authenticity.

The taste and smell of it I'm quite used to - and the taste of it's riverine version from the fish I ate in Changsha (google heavy metal Xiang River, it's quite scary), it's the sound of it I'm unsure of.

also on this weekend, Hallelujah Picassos with Loud Ghost, Bloodbags, plus DJs Stinky Jim and Peter Mac, Kings Arms on saturday, $15 on the door. Picasso core is one of a kind!

- TNAF didn't win the Critics' Choice their year - that was Street Chant, who totally rocked.
- DJ Shadow is actually a native of California.- And as Peter has let you know, the Picassos play the KA tomorrow night.

Yep San Francisco/Berkeley based I think. Originally part of Quaanum group of artists loosely including Lateef, members of Blackalicious, Dan the Automator, Qbert etc... All worth checking out.

The Lips seem to have removed that tweet. A grumpy post argument lapse by tired dudes on the road? They are a great band to follow on instagram. They still act pretty unhinged.
I like all the critics choice bands. In fact I just about like everything nominated at this years VNZMAs. I'd be fine with losing the alternative album award to Lawrence Arabia or UMO. Both great records.

But speaking of festivals, the one I’m looking forward to is next month’s multi-city Square Wave Festicval. Billed as an electronic music festival, I was a little sceptical at first that it only referred to a limited and indie-friendly subset of electronic music (somewhere around the chillwave, vaguely post-dubstep & low-fi semi-ironic hip-hop area). There’s a lot of that, as you’d expect from A Low Hum production, and I’m looking forward to many of those sorts of act (Black City Lights, Golden Axe, Randa) as I make my way through the huge lineup there’s a lot more diversity than I first thought.
I’m really loving Roland Tings’ bouncy minimal-ish techno:
And I’m also bracing myself for Container’s raw distorted beats, especially since seeing him messing around with modulars in the doco I Dream of Wires. He comes from the punky/noise/cassette scene, but his recent material would be pretty damned danceable if you’re in the right mood:
I was hoping for a bit more on the ambient/experimental side, but I’m still plenty excited.

David Dallas' new album "Falling Into Place" is brilliant. It reminds me of the Native Tongue stuff from the late '80s, and also a bit of the Death Row sound from the early '90s, but it mainly sounds like a product of Auckland and New Zealand in 2013.
I'm particularly in love with the two tracks he did with Ruby Frost, proving here's a lot more to her than being an X Factor judge. And all hail "Southside", a song which revels in the delights and achievements of South Auckland, rather than getting all dramatic about "mean streets". Plus "How Long" is the best seduction jam I've heard in years. Babies are going to be conceived to that track.

Also you should know you have been 'banned' from The Neo-Kalishnikovs blog. Awesome.
For those not in the know 'The Neos' are NZs best blog-troll band. They are pissed off at everything and it is thoroughly entertaining. They have really been ramping it up of late, subtly implying death threats etc.
Their music is actually not awful. You could imagine them getting a bit better and actually being quite popular but alas they are burning bridges at an alarming rate.
People might say 'don't feed the troll' but where is the fun in that? (sorry if I seem mean, I don't intent to be mean, I can identify with much of their angst I just never voiced it quite so much when I was at that stage of my life).

For those not in the know ‘The Neos’ are NZs best blog-troll band. They are pissed off at everything and it is thoroughly entertaining. They have really been ramping it up of late, subtly implying death threats etc.
It's like it's some sort of conceptual art project where they burn a new bridge every week. Very entertaining to follow, but I don't think they see it that way.

That'd be right. It's this one; something of a theme for the young McBride who was previously in the band Bandicoot, named after another (and probably best forgotten) PlayStation original, Crash Bandicoot.
Full disclosure, as his cousin, I'm extremely biased, but Daniel is a stupidly talented artist, and Egospect is an amazing album; I'm please he's a finalist. All three sound grand actually. This sea of talent is inspiring.

That was Ed Kuepper's first ever show in Auckland. I don't want to wait so long for the next one.
Nah. I saw him at Squid in the mid-90s, supported by Abel Tasmans. He had just released A King in the Kindness Room (I had to look that up) at the time and it was just him and a violinist.
Unfortunately either his plane was delayed or he got held up at customs and didn't arrive until really late. He must have come on after midnight and despite the fact that he must have been knackered, got right stuck in. Unfortunately close to three hours of Abel Tasmans left me desperate for air so I must have only stayed until 1ish (it was a school/work night).

I adore Brainfreeze so much. (Although the last time I saw DJ Shadow there were some pretty ropey vocalist spots that made me cringe a bit. Was that the Powerstation show? Probably.)

Just to divert attention from what is going these days in music: chanced on an amazing collection of old 78s, in good condition, at a Save the Children fair last Saturday. Meticulously-labelled boxes of 1930s/40s core jazz eg Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie, Jose Turner, Duke Ellington, Woody Herman etc eand a few novelty items (Hari Kari & His Saki Sippers). Obviously some old bloke's treasured collection. I am now tracking down a means to play them.

Only just found out this week that George Duke was RIP in August this year. Who?
Not everyone loves Frank Zappa but I grew up on diet of his work and George Duke was keyboard/vocalist in possibly the best incarnation of Frank's band in the mid-70s. There is no good live version of Inca Roads that I can find on YouTube so this link is just to the audio. Feast yourself on the combined talents in this track and know that I am sad on the one hand but happy at the thought of the jam sessions in heaven now that George and Frank are back together. -
