I love record shops, and I love owning a physical artifact - I don't own any music in digital-only format, although I will probably make an exception for the L.E.D.'s latest, because they're not going to publish it in a physical format. I dread the day when everything is digital, and I can no longer buy a CD or a record. But then I'm an old luddite who always owned a turntable, and was gutted when CDs replaced vinyl all those years ago.
I should, however, qualify my love of record shops with the statement that they have to be "proper" record shops - Real Groovy in Auckland, Galaxy and Pennylane in Christchurch, where you have a chance of finding something non-mainstream, and maybe talking to someone who shares your love of certain genres, and who isn't just trying to push "units". I had a complete and utter love affair with the Sounds record shop that used to be at the foot of Queen Street in Auckland, because the guy who ran it cared about music, and about his regulars - I bought lots of records from him because when I walked in, he'd say "You should listen to this" and I would and I'd love it.
I don't share this love for the Warehouse, or whatever the mall stores have rebranded as this week (Marbeck's? really? - they're nothing like how I remember Marbeck's in Queen's Arcade). But a real record shop, a proper record shop, I can spend hours in, just browsing, and invariably buying. I also buy a lot from overseas (yay New Zealand dollar!), but it's always physical goods.
Oh, music :) Australian black metal / ambient act Germ, who I just found out about today.

Yes, I'll be aiming for a copy of that. There's also an Eastern/Beastwars 7" Record Store Day only release coming - what a combination! Wonder if they cover each other songs live? It has been done before, well half at least - Delaney Davidson does a cracking live version of Snapper's 'Buddy'.

well - if you're up this way - he's playing at Southbound Records tomorrow at noon, so you could aks him to bang it out.
And it's OK Russell we forgive your abandonment of the light (smiley face? - also more for the rest of us, another smiley face?) and will keep the shops warm till you return.
Vinyly, I'm all a-tingle at the prospect of a charity shop roadtrip next Friday - got the day off and everything. Starting in Thames, then Te Aroha to Morrinsville, on to Puke, then Papakura and ending in Howick. There's gold to be dug. For cheep.

I won't be but I will likely see him Sunday evening at the Brewery in Chch. Agree, there's something about going into charity shops and delving through their record piles - throuble is getting through all the Nana Mouskouri, Val Doonican, James Last, etc to find that hidden gold!

I've never felt closer to the ground than when I was crowding the counters of mad little stores in Brixton and the West End as the latest platters were slapped on the turntables. That one, mate, I'll have that one playing now.

you're a good man and no mistake. he had this great 70s period where he (and the likes of Les Humphries, I think it was a German thing) used a lot of phased effects, chk his Voodoo Party album.

I won't speak for Morgue who is a writer for us, but price man. Record stores are effing pricey.
And also why not think of a new model? Have the physical albums there, but then have some kind of vending machine so you can flick through album covers, then you can plug your MP3 player in and download the music. Then you can have your sense of community but also buy MP3s which are more transferable in bulk than CDs. In fact that's a really good idea. If I wasn't so lazy I'd do it myself.

I love record stores... or did, not a fan of the Groovy experience but a fan of what it contains...
I do miss stores & those that inhabited them who have shaped my tastes and indulged my purchasing cravings - people who have unwittingly helped make me the person I am
These days like many I'm more digitally focused and when buying wax I do so online - for I get what I want quicker and cheaper
Not sure if I'll be venturing into town - considering it more for the spinners of vinyl than anything else, its a social thing... the Beastwars/Eastern 7" is on my want list & already ordered via an early riser who will be at store door on opening time and maybe that Moon Duo remix album

My rule of thumb is that any band the wrong side of 30 and/or 3 or 4 decent albums is almost certainly creatively bankrupt and coasting on the goodwill of their former glories. Black Sabbath appear to have made one last deal with the devil to continue to exist outside the usual space/time continuum.
Good for the garden, too, apparently. "exposure to Sir Cliff Richard killed every plant". Ahehehehe.
I've had good (albeit limited) experiences with 'Beatport' for dance music downloads, if you're after an alternative.

Thanks for the kind words about my rambling essay. Your point in response is well-made. What I was reaching for with "Your online world is one you build around yourself" was how we choose the vast majority of the stuff that pops up on our screens, in contrast to the physical world where you have to wander past everything else to get to your destination. But social stuff of all kinds changes that, and it was a bit of an undercooked comment anyway, for all the other reasons you offer.

That's exactly what the big stores were doing in 2004/2005. It didn't save them, of course, and actually seemed to integrate really poorly with the rest of the scene. And with internet becoming ubiquitous now (wifi everywhere!) I'm not sure how a smaller store could pull it off...
(I know someone who went through a phase of browsing bookshops in Wgtn, and when he saw something he liked, he ordered it on BookDepository on his phone right then and there for half the price.)

I fessed up $70 for 2 Daptone vinyl releases at Nelson's Everyman Records for Record Store Day today and they came with MP3 coupons to grab the digital version. This is perfect for me as it gives me home play plus the mobility of digital. The digital version will set you back $10-$20 alone so the $35 for lovely 180 gram vinyl seems ok. I wish all new vinyl did this.
In other news I'm still a James Blake tragic. Whatever Simon Sweetman says the bloke does lovely bottom end, proper floorboard shaking business with a gorgeous fragile surface. Highly recommend Overgrown for a late night winter session or two.

When you get to Te Aroha, Alan, go to the Bright Yellow Villa (I can't remember it's name) that sells heaps of Crown Lynn. I seem to remember they had heaps of old vinyl too.

hey Jackie, cheers so much for the tip, will definitely follow up. just need to conduct a bank job after how much I spent on rekids today. can report a healthy queue outside Southbound and in the rush I missed grabbing one of the Floyd See Emily Play 7s. no matter there were gems at real groovy. damn it was hot. had a good time playing and very cool to have a chat with Mr Grigg, a fine bloke and no mistake.

I used to love record stores. I'd wag school during the late 90s, catch a bus into the city and hang out in Real Groovy and BPM, and other stores for hours, listening and occasionally buying things. Those were genuinely pleasurable days. A couple years later I moved to Wellington, and Slow Boat and Real Groovy Wellington filled a gap between lectures, and helped me accumulate boxes of CDs - I haven't listened to a CD in the last two years.
Unfortunately, I crossed the ditch to Canberra, and was squarely wedged between a JB Hi-Fi (ew) and a local "indie" store which the locals feted but was as generic and uninteresting as anything else. That was the end for me. That, and living in increasingly exotic locations and seeing the physicality of music as an impediment to my life rather than an improvement.
