Back in the 1980s when I started music recording for Radio NZ Concert (or the Concert Programme as it was then) a reasonable amount of Lilburn’s music was being recorded, much of it new.
I recall one time when Margaret Nielsen (with whom he had a long association) was to record some of his piano pieces (I can’t recall which ones). I was told the Douglas Lilburn would be coming to the sessions.
I can still remember the trepidation – he was held in very high esteem by everyone – and this my first encounter with THE composer at a recording of his own material. What if he didn’t like the sound we got? (I think the only other time I felt this worried was much later, recording Dame Kiri in some studio sessions.)
I asked the producer what should I say. He said Douglas would probably just sit in the studio. When he arrived he went straight into the studio and spent the whole time there, and we didn’t in fact even speak.
It was interesting and a privilege to observe the composer and performer, both at the height of their powers, discussing the work at hand.
Some time later I recorded (I think) Michael Houstoun playing Chaconne (1946), a work that was performed only once before, and never recorded. I do know that he came in later to listen to the performance and was rather taken with it.
Other folk at RNZ worked more closely with him and have much better anecdotes – I have suggested that they share them here.

Looking forward to Elbow next Saturday and C W Stoneking (especially after hearing Nick Bollinger's interview with him). An interesting lineup for Womad 2015 too--Richard Thompson in particular. Such bountiful music,!

A hilarious, rip-roaringly-good read. Chocker full of brilliant anecdote after brilliant anecdote, though admittedly a few are of the "don't let the facts get in the way of a good story" whiff about them.

Yes, I find the term a bit odd too. But that's how it was quoted in the story.

I can't see anything in the code that invokes either directly. It's just an iframe embed.

Rest assured that Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision has no intention of carrying out a cull of TVNZ Archive content.
At Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision we are committed to preserving New Zealand’s audiovisual heritage, and making it available for current and future generations to enjoy.
We are currently working on a digitisation plan for the TVNZ Collection in order to increase access. While digitisation is a priority, it is Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision’s practice to keep master copies of all items on their original formats, along with preservation copies on various formats. This increases an item’s chances of longevity moving into the future, as technology changes. Keeping the master copies is particularly important in the case of the TVNZ Collection because TVNZ’s original copies are the most high resolution versions available of this content. The digital copies will coexist with the original analogue copies as the digitisation work progresses, and none of these precious TV treasures will be lost.

This 1970 clip of Lilburn ”demonstrating the sounds produced for a modern dance performance that include the electronic reconstitution of the sounds of the extinct huia bird” is wonderful. In this part of his career he was our BBC Radiophonic Workshop, in a way:
The acoustics section at DSIR in Lower Hutt was a fun place to play. Good tapes, good razor blades, I cut my teeth there playing silly games with reversed tapes, reverb and copying copious music off LPs for mates.
Spent a winter at Scott Base and DJd every friday night with my wierd selection of anything that included Goons and Python, Very Unamerican. At Midwinter there was an airdrop with the latest top toons of the previous 4 months included. I REALLY had fun creating a needle scratch loop and then playing all this new music and deciding 10 or 20 or 30 seconds in to hit the loop and move to the next. Absolute mayhem ensued within a few minutes as the station manager powered down to corrider to rescue the new music. Apoplectic he was and it took a bit to get back into the place next week!!
Extra bit. The Falklands were on that year and in the mornings the DJ on deck would spend half an hour reading the latest noos off the Telex from the Armed Forces Radio Network. The noos got round to how the Brits were doing against the Argies. Pretty good if you were on "our" side apparently. So at the end I rang up and asked if I could have a request. "Shuuurre Rarss, whaart would you laark?" "Could you play "Don't cry for me Argentina please." Deathly silence came over the airwaves. "Ummm....I think I will leave that off thanks Rarss". Within 5 minutes the OIC of McMurdo had grabbed the station manager and shot down to the station and went through the music collection and removed all 19 versions of "Don't cry for me Argentina". It were grand.

Near where the RIU typesetters were (’80s, Airedale St , Auckland?) there were some old commercial buildings that became un-tenanted and eventually abandoned looking and then demolished. in the cellar of one was the most wonderful scale model of an acoustic sound shell stage – that one could almost stand in – I think it was either a recording studio or summat to do with the University…
a work of art itself just to look at
and listen to as a giant.I hope someone saved it before the place came down

But Rand California, the person, had a unique guitar sound that just don't show its age.
